Mahjonging For Fun and Fashion Awareness

What is Mahjong Solitaire? What is Traditional Mahjong? How might Mahjong promote Fashion?

There are actually two prevalent forms of Mahjong that people play, and I am focusing here about how some people in the United States enjoy Mahjong.

There are the many electronic Mahjong solitaire games where the tiles are stacked upon one another and the play challenge is to remove all pieces from the board.

There is also the traditional Mahjong usually on card tables with a group of three or four people.
When three people play, a "dummy" is the fourth player. The players begin by building a physical wall such as the one you see in the picture. (You never have a wall on the electronic matching game).

Traditional Mahjong gives you the feel of playing cards with dominoes. It is an individual competition (no partners as in Bridge). Players are penalized for not playing defensively.

There are several suits:

CRACKS which are Chinese characters
BAMS which are called Bamboos
DOTS
Each of these suits goes from 1 thru 9.
There are also WINDS called North,West,East, and South(no surprises here).
There are Flowers.
There are Jokers.
There are Dragons: One is Green, One is Red, One is White. The Green Dragon is associated with Bamboos. The Red Dragon is associated with Cracks. The White Dragon is associated with dots.

The objective is to collect 14 tiles in one of many prescribed combinations. These combinations are defined yearly by two Leagues. Because the combinations change every year, this levels some of the advantage that experienced players have over the newbie players. I won't go into all the rules and conventions here. (There is an interesting passing maneuver called 'The Charleston'.)

For those who wish to follow up on the precise definition of the game, you might consult the National Majong League.
Every year, they issue a new card which defines the combinations for that year and you can see that I have not explained all the rules here.
If you purchase a Mahjong set (I give advice below. Relatives often seem to purchase the unintended versions for gifts), you will also need to order card(s) for the current year.

The game has an extensive history in Asia where it originated. The purpose of this LENS is to encourage you to start playing, making sure you don't set yoursehttp://www.mahjongnews.com/en/index.php/nieuws/various-news/55-chengdumuseum.htmllf up with the wrong Mahjong set. For those people who have played a few games I recommend
a review of Mahjong by Sloperama. I found this useful when studying strategies for the Charleston.

Mahjong News is also fun with its international coverage.

I also include a proposal for the fashion business to exploit the game as a promotional device: Fusion of Fashion and Mahjong tiles. If you are logged into Squidoo, stop by and visit the comment section.

Sample of a Mahjong Combination

Fourteen Tiles on the Rack

Players would refer to this as a '4+3=7' combination. The combination is done in CRACKS. Note the use of a JOKER to substitute for a '3' and the FLOWERS. Other '7' hands appearing on a card might be "6+1=7" and so on, also with the four FLOWERS. These hands could have been done with DOTS substituting for the 4's and 3's and 7's. Or likewise BAMS taking the position of the numbered tiles.

Traditional Mahjong Game Set

Good for building walls and playing in groups of three to four people. There are many sets available. Be sure to pick one out that is
American Mahjong, especially as the tiles have numbers in addition to the Chinese characters. The tile inventory for American Mahjong doesn't match the asian version.

The World Series of Mah Jong page mentions four various rule sets:

Richi,Chinese Official, Hong Kong, and American

. You need to select a set that corresponds to rules.
A comprehensive guide to choosing rules is available from which you can sort out why it is important to know what rules you are using.

A Calorie Neutral Activity

The Positives

It has been my experience that playing Mahjong, while not burning calories at the rate that one would burn them in a gym, doesn't add to calorie consumption.

People don't eat food because of the pace of the game. Players are busy yelling the tile identifier and picking up tiles.

There is a strategy in the game whereby the brain exercises "set shiffting". This means that what one thought one was collecting has to be changed to another combination. Perhaps this neuronal activity might ward off Alzheimer's, but I haven't seen any studies about this.

One notices that a popular venue for Mahjong groups is Senior centers.
Another venue is Clubhouses of Homeowner's Associations
Game rooms in Cruise Lines have mahjong. Passengers must remember to pack their cards.

It really helps to observe the game and ask questions of players. But do get permission from the players to do this.

Weighing in on Mahjong

What I have observed is that people are so absorbed in the game that their hands aren't free to move food into their mouths.

Here you see a representative collection of tiles, but players start the game with 152 of them.

Fashion in Paris and Mahjong

The Great Mahjong book discusses Mahjong variations in eight countries. The section on France says that Mahjong became a fad in 1923 and inspired fashion with its motifs. There is even a reference in it to a song about Mahjong. (There is a lot of terminology that I myself don't need to use when playing the game). I got my copy of the book at an exhibition of the Chinese Terra Cotta Warriors that was held in Santa Ana, but the book is available online.

Promoting Fashion through a Video Game Mahjong

I would love to see some Mahjong electronic tile matching games based on suits with new symbols. This would be for electronic solitaire Mahjong only. (The inner logic of the matching game would be the same. The software would just remap the tile images, a remap of the art.)

For example, I might replace FLOWERS with 8 different handbag styles. DOTS might be replaced with tiny images of a new fragrance bottle. CRACKS might be replaced by pictures of nine different dresses. WINDS could be represented by images of rings, bracelets, necklaces, and earings. BAMS might be replaced with tiny images of a shoe. A silhouette of a model could be labeled as JOKER. The three DRAGONS could be three different hairstyles.

There could be new editions of the electronic game as time progresses and the seasons change with new looks going down the runways. The Mahjong leagues themselves change the traditional game periodically, albeit they change rules and not the appearance of the game pieces.

My vision would consist of licensed images from fashion houses and clothing manufacturers or possibly a department store chain which would appear on the tiles. The businesses would have the advantage of promoting awareness of their designs as players match the tiles.
If a player wants to know more about the company who makes the jewelry or dress or accessory and where she can obtain it, she could merely right click the tile for the information to be displayed.

The solitaire form of Mahjong is addictive, so a fashion promoter might as well have images of the products burned into the player's psyche!

So, someone in the Fashion Industry, please commission this! A rough concept appears below. Specific designs can be substituted for a designer campaign.

An Automated Mahjong Machine

The Greatest Thing since Sliced Bread?

I am not sure exactly which tile sets these machines use, but here is one in action.. On You-Tube. The other players and I like to use our time while manually building the walls discussing what happened in the last game.

"Something there is that doesn't love a wall." So sayeth the poet, Robert Frost, but I doubt if he ever anticipated electric Mahjong walls.

What John Nash's jam-packed audience wanted to know

John Nash, who pioneered game theory, gave a lecture on Mar 11,2011 at Shue Yan University in Hong Kong on the topic of 'cooperative optimization'. A question from the floor was if game-theory could give an edge in the Chinese game of Mahjong. Could Nash's three-player game in the theory be extended to a four-player game. Nash said it should "be similar in theory. But problems may appear."

The Charleston in Mahjong -- What is it?

type=text

The Charleston takes place at the beginning of a Mahjong game. It is a passing ritual whereby players pass three tiles from one player to another. This is an opportunity to get rid of tiles the player may not want.

It is also a dance named after the city, a name that is part of the American heritage of the 1920's. The dance was popular with Flappers who often were considered rebellious women.

People told me that Mah Jong was like gin rummy. Wrong. This is a game for smart people with good short term memories and exceptional pattern recognition skills. No wonder I don't play it.
