A-Z of Giving an Extra Special Maid of Honor Toast

This A-Z guide will help you make a very special maid of honor toast that reflects your love and friendship for the bride.

From anecdotes to hand gestures and mirrors to your voice, this lens will give you an insight into aspects you need to be aware of as you prepare your maid of honor toast.

Please know from the beginning that this is something you can achieve. Set about this task with a positive mind set and you are half way there! You will make an amazing maid of honor toast!!

The A-Z for an Extra Special Maid of Honor Toast

A-M

Ais for anecdotes. Do include appropriate anecdotes about your friend the bride, your friendship or the time you met. Remember to be amusing and not embarrassing!

Bis for bride. She has given you the priviledge of being her maid of honor. She is your friend. Show your appreciation for her with your maid of honor toast.

Cis for calm, cool and collected. Yes, three words here for emphasis! Relax you can do this. Remember no-one can see your hands shaking. Use your voice to give the impression of cool, confidence!

D is for delivery. Be clear. Speak slowly. This is not a race, so take your time.

Eis for encouraging. Offer encouraging (and maybe emotional) words to the bride and groom for a successful future together.

Fis for friendship. The bride is your friend. You know her well and your friendship has many aspects and much history. This is all great material for your maid of honor toast.

Gis for greeting. This is the first thing you will include in your toast. Give it impact. Also, make sure you know in advance who you need to include in your greeting.

His for hand gestures. Yes they are allowed and can add animation to your speech. They can also help with "shaking hands syndrome". Practice them in advance and ensure that they are not so grand as to knock anyone out!

Iis for involve. Involve your audience if you are comfortable with this. This can be as simple as asking "Doesn't the bride look stunning to-day?"

Jis for joke. Whether it is a joke or a one liner or two, you will be amazed at the positive response you will get. Keep them clean - it's a wedding not a strip show!

Kis for knock their socks off just because I know you will!

Lis for likeability. The bride really likes you already but for those who don't know you smile! Be relaxed. You are not adressing the issues of world poverty. If you enjoy giving your toast (or at least appear to), everyone else will enjoy it too!

Mis for mirror. Mirror? Yes the mirror you are going to practice your toast in front of! Please do this at least once a day in advance of the wedding. Speak out loud!

The A-Z for an Extra Special Maid of Honor Toast

N-Z

Nis for normal. Please stick to your normal language (except for swear words!). You don't need your toast to sound like an ode to Shakespeare! Be comfortable with the words that you choose!

O is for organise. Organise your maid of honor toast well in advance. Plan what you are going to say, write it down, practice it, rewrite it....

Pis for practice. Yes I know I just mentioned the "P" word but I mention it here for emphasis. You need to say your toast aloud. You need to eliminate any tongue twisters. Ideally, get some feedback from someone close.

Qis for quote. Feel free to include a quote about friendship or a quote from a poem or a movie that you feel is appropriate.

Ris for review. Please review your toast a day or two after you first write it.

S is for serious. I am not suggesting that your toast has to be serious, just that you take the task of preparing it seriously. Do this for the bride and also do it for you. Create something you are proud of!

Tis for thank you. Thank the bride for choosing you as her maid of honor. Thank the hosts of the wedding, if appropriate. Also ask the bride if there is anyone particular she wants you to thank on her behalf.

Uis for understanding. Understand your audience. Are they conservative or liberal? Younger or older? Understand the style of wedding your friend wants. Is it casual or formal? This will help you shape your toast.

V is for voice. We rarely pay attention to our own voice. When you practice your toast, be aware of your voice. Is it soft or loud? Is it low pitched or high pitched? Practice controlling it so that you know how to "turn" up and down the volume as you need to during your toast.

Wis for write. Yes make sure your maid of honor toast is written down. I suggest you use small cards with clear concise points on them. They are easy to handle and more discreet and elegant than large pieces of paper.

Xis for X-rated. I have mentioned the word appropriate several times and I stress it here. Chances are that you and the bride have had a few wild nights out or adventurous moments over the years. Please do not even think about sharing any stories that you wouldn't want your own grandma to hear!

Yis for YOU! The bride has chosen you as her maid of honor. She is not expecting a movie star to turn up to give the maid of honor toast. Relax and be who you are. Be yourself!

Zis for zany. You don't have to bow down every rule you have read about wedding etiquette. You might want to be creative and do something a little zany. Sing your toast? Get your pom poms out and "cheer" your toast? Just make sure you run it by the bride first and that it is appropriate (yes that word again!) to the style of wedding your friend is dreaming of!
