What is a Maine Coon Cat?

Maine Coon Cats are one of the most popular cat breeds in the World. These gentle giants of the cat world are extremely smart and easy to train, but it is their gigantic size and sweet nature that makes them the most wanted cats on the planet.

I personally had never even heard of Maine Coon Cats until I adopted a kitten, that just happened to end up being a Maine Coon. This photo is of my first Maine Coon Cat, Kitty Wompuss, who has now passed over the Rainbow bridge & is very missed. He is the reason I fell in love with this incredible breed.

Kitty Wompuss was extremely smart, and just beautiful. I now have my 2nd Maine Coon named Scrapper and he is another example of how wonderful, gentle & smart this cat breed is.

Maine Coon's are BIG!

The Gentle Giants of Cats

The most distinguishing characteristic of these cats is their size. Maine Coons are long muscular cats. The Guinness Book of World Records longest cat is a Maine Coon.

This is a photo of my Maine Coon Mr. Kitty Wompuss, He is was 40 inches long and weighed 22 pounds. Maine Coons take 4 years to reach full maturity and size. Kitty Wompuss was only 2 years old when this photo was taken.

Maine Coon Characteristics

It's Easy to Identify a Maine Coone Cat

Maine Coon's have easy to spot characteristics that set them apart from other breeds. All Maine Coon's have the identifying "M" on their foreheads, even solid white and solid black varieties have slightly different colored fur there in the "M" shape.

They all have the lynx tips on their ears and the distinguishing Lion's main of fur around their necks. They also have long hair between their toes for snow walking.

Maine Coon Facts

Maine Coons are one of the oldest cat breeds native to North America, and is the official State cat of Maine.

A Maine Coon Was The Winner Of The First Cat Show In The U.S.

A female Maine Coon cat named Cosey was the winner of the first ever North American Cat Show in 1895. Maine Coons were no strangers to cat shows even before that. In the 1860's farmers at the Skowhegan fair in Maine held a contest to show off their coon cats called it the Maine State Champion Coon Cat contest.

Although Maine Coons enjoyed popularity in their early days, by the 1950's their popularity had declined so much that the were mistakenly declared extinct. Luckily that wasn't true, but it did inspire Maine Coon breeders to revitalize the breed. Now Maine Coons are considered the second most popular cat breed in the World.

Maine Coon Facts

Maine Coons are known to be very verbal cats, that enjoy talking back to their humans. Maine Coons often talk with a chirping or trilling sound, almost like a purr and a yowl combined.

Maine Coon's come in every color, except the Siamese point types.

Maine Coon Facts

Maine Coons are built for snow and cold weather. Their extremely soft and silky fur actually consists of three layers, a short under coat, a medium length fur and wispy long hairs. This makes the cats fur water resistant. Maine Coons have long fur between their toes that keeps their paws warm and acts like a snow shoe, and their bushy tails can be wrapped around them for warmth & to shelter them from the wind.

Scrapper Is A Big Maine Coon Cat

2 Years Old & Still Growing

Maine Coon Scrapper

Scrapper is a very large Male Maine Coon. This is him sitting on the table next to my laptop. Maine Coons take four years to mature instead of the usual 2 years for most breeds of cats. Since Scrapper is still young he hasn't developed his full mane yet. Scrapper still has a way to go until he is full grown. He is currently 38 inches long & weighs 23 pounds. He would be longer, but he has Spinal Muscular Atrophy, which is a common birth defect in Maine Coons due to over breeding. Scrapper was a rescued kitten & is neutered. Because Maine Coons are so popular some disreputable breeders run kitten mills & birth defects like SMA & Hip Displasia have become far to common in Maine Coons that are over bred. When looking for a Maine Coon kitten or cat, always go to a reputable breeder or consider rescuing a Maine Coon Cat from a shelter.

Maine Coons Are The Best!

Patricia says:

I had Molly, my beautiful Maine Coon for almost 18 years. She was a conversationalist and I taught her how to say "tuunnaah" when she was hungry. When my mother passed away last year, Molly laid down on the pillow I had my head on and nuzzled the back of my head and hugged my neck as if to comfort me in my sorrow. I have never heard of a cat ever doing that, so sensitive, loving and almost human. She passed away last week and I miss her so very much!!!

BarbaraWill says:

All cats are lovely!

Sheila Orff says:

i love coon cats and miss the one we had...:(

Sethiol says:

Before my wife and I got married, she had picked up a maine coon as a kitten and her nephew named him Jake the Snake, after the wrestler. By the time my wife and I meet and married shortly after, Jake was 5 years old. I was a dog lover and could see now real point in owning a cat. Jake changed all of that with his talking and loving almost dog like qualities. Jake is 17 now and nearing the end of his road. My wife and I have had three other cats in addition to Jake, two of which met untimely deaths due to sudden illness for one and the other being mauled by a neighboring dog. We had been searching for another MC when we came acrossed a craigslist ad for one that needed to be rehomed due to him having issues with two of the previous owners cats. Mr Thumbs is a polydactyl (has six toes on each front paw), is 2 years old, and a wonderful cat to have around the house. He hasnt started talking yet. Jake wakes us almost every morning with his chattering and gentle head/nose butting. I hope Tom(we renamed him) picks up some of these annoying but wonderful habits.

Judy Thompson says:

Cara says:

I have one beautiful Maine Coon, named Gato, I always knew there was something special with this cat, and then I saw a TV show on Maine Coons, looked over at Gato and there was his "M"... This is by far the smartest cat I have ever owned.. and he follows us everywhere... Opens doors like a human, and talks constantly... I will only own Maine Coons from here on out!!

JoshK47 says:

Definitely my favorite cat - they're so huge and fluffy!

DinaDLG says:

I've always had plain old DSH cats, but always have wanted a Maine Coone. I guess now that I'm in AZ and there's no cold weather though, it wouldn't be a good idea!

nightbear says:

I've been owned by two Main Coons. The most amazing and beautiful animals. Very affectionate giving creatures.

Hip_and_Hot says:

Wow, where can I get one of these giant cats?

dascott says:

I also adopted a 4-pound kitten at the Humane Society that they said was a 3-month-old domestic shorthair. Turns out she was a 7-week-old Maine coon. She is so beautiful and I love her a lot.

No, I prefer...

itsmuzza2011 says:

lovelylashes says:

I love Maine Coons but mine is just an orange tabby so that's my favorite.

Photahsiamirabel says:

How can anyone compare? All cats are purrrrfection. They are adorable, but I fell in love with Persians....

RickBasset says:

They are awesome! I love the "M" on their heads! I just don't have a favourite!

mbrownauthor says:

Absolutely beautiful! Don't have a favorite breed though. I love ALL cats.

PaulOnBooks says:

Gorgeous creatures, but I'll stay loyal to black and white mongrels.

amandascloset0 says:

They aren't my favorite cats, but they rank in the top 5. Love them!!

MJSchrader says:

Black cats! I've had 2. Salem has been with me 11 years. Both have been domestic medium hair.
But then there is Lilo, she was hidden in my shrubs. After 6 months it was decided she was Maine Coon, just because everyone asked if she was. She's 13 pounds and a lot of fluff. She squeaks so she gets called Mousey but she loves to talk. She is often a companion cat, which I didn't know cats were. (As a dog lover this is nice :) )

Maine Coon Personality Traits

The Best Thing About Maine Coon Cats

Maine Coon PersonalityIt is the Maine Coon's personality that really sets these amazing cats apart from all other breeds. Maine Coons are extremely smart and easy to train. They have a lot of characteristics that are more dog like in nature, than cat like. Maine Coons will follow their person around the house or yard, come running to the door to greet you when you come home and tend to sniff everything much like dogs.

Maine Coons are known to actually enjoy water and some even teach themselves to turn on water faucets to get themselves a drink. In many ways they are similar to the raccoons they are named after, because they often use their front paws in an almost hand like manner. They have been known to pick up food or toys with their front paws. Many Maine Coon owners must keep their doors locked because these cats are long enough to reach the door handle and smart enough to open the door.

Maine Coons are also playful all throughout their lives, not just as kittens. They love to play fetch and often keep stuffed animals as toys they like to carry around the house. Maine Coons are very social cats, again more like a dog, Maine Coons come when you call them and are always happy to see you. They are seldom lap cats because of their large size, instead preferring to sit next to you. Still, they love to cuddle, give kisses, hugs and talk your ear off all day long.
