Problems Of Having A Large Outdoor Fish Pond

Building your large outdoor fish pond was fun. Now fully built, you've selected the best outdoor fish, planted great water garden plants and look forward to wonderful evenings beside the cool water admiring your creation. That is until the water begins to turn green and murky.

One of the biggest problems faced by any outdoor fish pond owner, irregardless of the size of the fish pond, is keep the fish pond water clear. Ideally, you should consider water clarity before building your fish pond and incorporate it into your design. But if you haven't, there are still things you can do to maintain large outdoor fish ponds well.

If You Have Not Built Your Outdoor Fish Pond....

When you first decide to build an outdoor fish pond, your focus should not only be on beauty but functionality. You need to incorporate certain features in your design to ensure that it will not make maintaining your outdoor fish pond a dreaded chore next time. Here are some important things to consider before you start building your outdoor fish pond.

1) Use good pond liners. Using a sturdy pond liner will keep dirt and soil out of your pool. A good fish pond liner will stay leak proof for almost twenty year.

2) Location is important. Building an outdoor fish pond below a tree may make it scenic but it will also cause your maintenance activities to be chaotic. You will have to constantly deal with falling leaves, fruits and animal droppings. Plus, the tree will make a great perch for predatory birds eyeing those yummy fish beneath them.

3) Place rocks around the rim of the pond. Rocks packed tight around the rim will prevent soil and dirt from falling into the water. It will also prevent dirt from accidentally being kicked in by people around the pond.

4) Don't place your pond in direct sunlight. Algae are plants. Having a pond with full sunlight the whole day encourage plant growth and will turn your pond green faster. If possible, place your pond in a shady area. This will also be kinder on your fish.

If You Have Already Built Your Outdoor Fish Pond...

If you did not incorporate these tips in your fish pond design, all is not lost. It may require a little extra effort in maintaining your large outdoor fish pond but it can still be done. A little research will help you decide on the method that you'd prefer to undertake. A good book to read on fish pond care and combating algae is Fantastic Fish Ponds. Here are some tips on properly maintaining your fish pond.

1) Get a good filtration system. Clear pond water eventually becomes murky and toxic because of tiny aquatic organisms and decomposing organic material. A good filtration system removes the decomposing matter and prevents the water from turning murky, unkempt and smelly.

2) Chemical Algaecide. This is a very common method of immediately killing off algae. Many of these chemicals contain a copper derivative and are found in either liquid or granular form. They work by killing off algae blooms quickly and efficiently but they do need to be used with caution.

3) Beneficial pond bacteria. Beneficial bacteria are considerably safer for ponds compared to algaecide since they do not kill the algae instantly but reduce its spread over time. What the bacteria does is to lower nutrients in the pond and break down any organic material that may be present in the water. In doing this, they make it harder for algae to grow and expand. Beneficial bacteria products come in the form of liquid or powder.

4) Plant lilies and irises. These plants tend to compete successfully against algae for available nutrients thus keeping its spread in check. This would be a more eco-friendly and natural way of countering algae but if you choose this as an option for your algae problem, you need to realize that it would take a lot of such plants to have any effect.

Whichever form of anti algae methods you choose to you, remember that you should not be killing off algae at one go. Algae, like any other plant life, release oxygen into the water and a sudden loss of algae would suddenly decrease the oxygen level in your water and kill off your fish.

Hi Jeff, thanks for dropping by.

The greenish muck and algae, while may be unsightly to us, was actually pumping in lots of oxygen into your pond and your fish were thriving on the high levels of oxygen. Suddenly removing all the algae from the pond would deplete the pond of the oxygen the fish had gotten used to and cause them to die. The only thing you can do now is allow the remaining fish to get used to the lower levels of oxygen which they will. A good filtration system will clear up the milky colouring fast.

In the future, do not suddenly remove every bit of algae. Rather, I would suggest using beneficial bacteria which will remove the algae gradually and not cause a shock to the fish.

hey;in the past few weeks i cleaned my mothers pond appox. 950 gals. the first time in 20 or more years, the fish were doing great, they had even had little ones every year.(GOLD FISH)the leaves an muck were about a foot deep an the water a slim green color. i removed all the fish (appox 50). then pumped the pond dry, over and over untill it was clean.we refilled it with city water and then added the algae an chlorine removers as directed on the bottles.after giving the fish time to ajust to the temp. we released them they all did fine for a while then they started dieing,2 an 3 at a time for about 3 days.that has all stopped but the water is now a milkey color with some foaming.the pump she has pump 360 gals per hr,and there is no filtering at all but the fish have live in ths muck water for years .i know ive done something wrong please tell me how to fix it.
