Making Wishes What Do You Wish For Most Of All?
Ranked #7,956 in Culture & Society, #162,533 overall
make your wish come true
What do you wish for? If you could make a wish come true what would it be? I expect most of us have made a wish at some time in our lives.
There are all sorts of things people wish for, health, happiness, fame, wealth, luck, the list goes on and on. Wish Making is a key element in many fictional and fantasy stories. Often wishes are granted by Genies, the fantasy characters who grant you the famous 'three wishes', frequently they are granted by fairies, or witches and wizards.
Its not just spirits that grant wishes, wishes can be granted at special places too. We've all heard of wishing wells I'm sure, but how many of us know their special Celtic name of Clootie? More often than not Clootie's are natural springs rather than the traditional stone deep well with its bucket.
I've always tried to keep an open mind about wishes, not sure if there is anything in the idea. There are a couple of occasions where I have wished for something and it seems to have come true. Before my partner and I got together I really wished for it to happen. Luckily for me we have now had many years of happiness together. I also wished for the safety of my youngest son who was literally two days from leaving home to join the British Parachute Regiment. In a bizarre and (in normal circumstances) unpleasant situation he was assaulted at a fast food take away, having his jaw broken. This meant he was unable to join up. I was filled with a mixture of dismay and relief that whilst he was badly hurt he was unable to go dangerous front line unit.
There are some psychologists who suspect there is a connection between wish making and things happening in the real world. They think it has something to do with conceptualization and goal setting. Sports psychologists have produced several examples where wishes about sports injury recovery seem to have increased the speed at which sports men and women recover.
Some psychologists believe that expressed wishes are indications of deeply repressed desires. Freud's interest in slips of the tongue is probably the most important work in this area.
Why not see if you can make your wishes come true.
