Why Bother with Jewelry?
You may be wondering what's the point in making and selling jewelry. Maybe you enjoy making jewelry, but you can't see putting forth the extra effort in selling it; or perhaps you're looking to start a home business, but jewelry-making just doesn't seem quite right.
Why make jewelry?
Jewelry is a great handmade business to get into, as it's easy to start making jewelry and it's easy to target a specific style, or to work in various styles in order to market to different groups of people. You can make a simple piece of beach jewelry with some hemp string and cheap beads in under an hour, or you can spend days making a beautiful and complex piece of jewelry using beading wire and delicate crystal beads. With the right materials and a good pattern, you can make amazing jewelry even if it's your first time; and once you start practising, you'll learn what techniques look best together and will be able to create your own beautiful patterns from scratch.
But isn't selling jewelry really difficult? I just want to enjoy my hobby!
If you don't want to dedicate time to taking your jewelry out to retail stores or make the amount of jewelry required to have your own full-sized online shop then yes, it does seem like selling jewelry can be difficult. Fortunately, you don't need to commit yourself to a full-time jewelry job in order to sell your work. You can sell a few pieces as you make them via eBay or Etsy. Selling jewelry has several benefits over making it just for yourself: you can earn enough money to cover the cost of supplies, you can experiment with more styles than you might if you were making the jewelry only for yourself, and you will enjoy the satisfaction of knowing someone else enjoys and admires your work.

Jewelry Tools & Workspaces ◊ Buy a Beadboard ◊ More Jewelry Supply Lenses
Making anything requires some basic supplies. Jewelry is no exception. You need a place to work - any flat surface will do for starters, though it's even better to have some sort of organisation system for your beads and other supplies - and some basic jewelry material. Start off with whatever beads, findings, and other materials your patterns tell you to use, and then experiment with different materials to see if you can make the pattern more interesting.

Buy a Beadboard
Want something a little nicer than the paper version?
Bead Board 40 Inch
Amazon Price: $4.99 (as of 12/29/2009)![]()
A handmade beadboard is quick, simple, and costs no more than a sheet of paper, but a store-bought beadboard has its advantages. Most obviously, the channels curve to give you a better idea of how the completed jewelry will look, and the channels are much longer to give you more room to lay out your design. The wells in the middle of the beadboard can also be useful for helping you sort out your beads.

Where to Sell Jewelry
The Pros and Cons of the Most Popular Places to Sell Your Jewelry
There are many places to sell jewelry, both online and off - some places better than others. The one thing all these places have in common, though, is none of them are perfect. As different pieces sell better in different venues, and different people have an easier time working in different ways, it's probably best if you try several alternatives to see what works best for your particular style.
Your own personal website
Setting up your own website and shop is fairly easy and will make you look more professional, and once people are on your site, they'll be seeing only YOUR jewelry - not your jewelry alongside the jewelry of your competitors. The biggest downside is the potential difficulty in gaining traffic and customer trust, especially when just starting out.0 points
Etsy.com
Etsy is an online shop and community specifically for selling handmade items or supplies. While there are not as many customisation options as there would be on a personal website, an Etsy shop done right still looks very professional.0 points
eBay.com
eBay is a popular site for buying and selling, and many artists and crafters have had incredible success selling their work there. Others have found the site too crowded for their pieces to stand out, or all their potential customers looking for bargain prices lower than the jewelry is worth.0 points
Traditional brick-and-mortar stores
Selling jewelry in a real-life brick-and-mortar store requires not only designing jewelry the final customer will wear, but designing jewelry the owner of the store thinks customers will wear. Fortunately, once you have convinced the owner of the worth of your pieces, customers are far more likely to see your jewelry and consider you to be a well-established jeweler, even if you are just starting out.0 points
Cartfly
Cartfly.com allows you to upload pictures and write descriptions for a simple flash-based store which you can place on your personal site, on MySpace or Facebook, or in a variety of other places. It's simple to use and updating it on Cartfly automatically updates it anywhere you've put the code, so you'll always have identical shops wherever you've placed it. It's a good option if you already have multiple places you'd like to show your jewelry (such as a jewelry-selling site, a Facebook page, a...0 points
