Make Doll Clothes from Socks

Make Doll Clothes from Socks

You can make clothes for a doll of any size using socks. Choose lightweight or heavy socks in any colour or pattern. Use baby of children's socks for smaller dolls. Some clothes will need elastic at the top of the sock; others will require ribbing or plain knitting. Follow the cutting diagrams but measure your doll before cutting. As socks can unravel, you will need to sew hems or fold and sew narrow ribbon or lace over the open stitches. Add sequins, beads, small buttons or appliques to decorate.

Sundress, Blouse, Panties

1. Sundress: Use a sock with an elastic top. Measure the distance from the doll's chest to the bottom of the dress and cut the top of the sock the same length. If necessary, cut straps or use ribbon to make straps. Sew hem on the sock bottom.

2. Blouse:  Cut the middle of the sock as indicated. Make a slit for the head in the heel of the sock and a slit on the opposite side for the bottom of the blouse. Sew hems.

3. Panties: Cut the sock off below the heel allowing enough length above the doll's waist for elastic. Cut holes in the sides for legs. Fold over the top and sew; insert elastic for the waist.

Jumper or Blouse, Bathing Suit

1. Jumper or Blouse: Cut the top of the sock the required length. Cut out neck and armholes and sew the shoulder seams together.

2. Bathing Suit: Cut from the toe of the sock as shown. Fold the straps and criss cross over the back.

Hat, Skirt, Pants

1. Hat: Cut off the elastic top portion of the sock. Turn inside out and sew a running stitch around the open end and pull tight. Turn right side out. Add a pom pom if you wish.

2. Skirt: Cut a half circle out of the leg of the sock. Make a slit in the top, add a snap or elastic if needed.

3. Pants: Cut socks off below the heel. Cut a lit up the centre. Turn wrong side out and sew the side seams. Turn right side out and cut small slits at the bottom of each leg. Add elastic to the waist.

Pants, Cap, Beanie Hat

1. Pants (Style 2): Make as above but use the top of the sock with elastic waist.

2. Cap: Cut the heel of the sock as indicated. Add ribbon ties.

3. Beanie Hat: Cut the toe of the sock. Roll up the edges and sew into place.
