Too many tomatoes! This gives me a new way to make use of those and I do like dried tomatoes in pasta salad. Well done.

We usually end up with way more tomatoes than we can deal with and drying is definitely something I want to try this year. We made pasta sauce last year and froze it which worked 'ok' but we got sick of it fast. Drying sounds like a better idea.

You know, I had never contemplated drying my tomatoes. But, now I am encouraged to give them a try.

I love your tutorial on making dried tomatoes! What a treat it is to have these to enjoy during the winter months. I've made them before, both in a dehydrator and by setting them on covered screens out in the sun, but have never used the oven method and think it's great you described it, so this tasty snack can be made by those who don't have a dehydrator!

This is an excellent lens. I'm not such a fan of dried tomatoes, but I love fresh ones, and plum tomatoes are the best. I used to grow my own tomatoes, but where we live now we don't get the right amount of sun unfortunately. Good resource, blessed.

I never realized that drying them was something I could do myself! Next year I'll make sure to have a plum tomato plant so I can try this!

  • lemonsqueezy May 17, 2011 @ 11:11 am | delete
Wow! This is a great lens. My husband planted plenty of tomatoes. I have been researching canning techniques. Drying sounds feasible too.

  • cannedguds Mar 31, 2011 @ 8:52 pm | delete

my hubby loves sun dried tomatoes
  • ideadesigns Jan 29, 2011 @ 11:08 am | delete
Very good lens, I've never tried dried tomatoes. The dehydrator looks like a good thing to have, mostly because I love dried fruits :) Fresh garden tomatoes are the best to use!
  • HomeCanning Jan 29, 2011 @ 2:17 am | delete
Many of us in our backyard garden grow tomatoes as it a crop that can be easily grown even in a smaller area or limited space. Also tomato is the best vegetable for canning. Home canning tomato sauce is preferred over the supermarket one as you can be sure that the handpicked tomatoes are of best quality. You can based on your own personal choice either can the whole tomato or can even puree it and store.

This seems very doable. I'll have to remember this when the next tomato crop comes in 'cause I love dried tomatoes.

  • ZazzleEnchante Dec 1, 2010 @ 1:47 am | delete
Great lens! Never knew the drying could be done so quickly at home. Informative, interesting lens, great pics. Blessed by a SquidAngel.
  • moonlitta Nov 30, 2010 @ 2:41 am | delete
I would try that. Till now I've only dried peppers. Tomatoes only dried for the winter would be just great.
  • Mujjen Oct 7, 2010 @ 4:01 pm | delete
I used to dry my tomatoes outside in the sun, sprinkled with a little bit of salt. I would place a net over so the flies wouldn't touch them. Got a bit brittle, but very tasty!
  • Jimmie Sep 29, 2010 @ 12:18 pm | delete
Only 12 hours? As moist as they are, I thought it would take longer. Beautiful lens.
  • kevinw1 Sep 15, 2010 @ 4:36 pm | delete
We use our dried tomatoes to a make a rosemary-tomato bread loaf in the bread machine. Extremely yummy!
  • steveffeo Aug 9, 2010 @ 9:30 pm | delete
I think this would also work in a solar oven been looking at doing this for a few years I always eat up the tomatoes or make salsa or sause first
  • kevinw1 Sep 15, 2010 @ 4:38 pm | delete
We tried drying cherries in a solar oven and although it does work, the outsides tend to cook before they dry. Better is a solar dehydrator that keeps the temperature a bit lower and provides air circulation to carry away the moisture, so the food dries rather than cooks.

I needed to know this last summer when we had an over abundance of tomatoes...this year they are barely growing at all.....but if that changes I will sure give this a try over letting so many go to waste as before.
  • hlkljgk Aug 5, 2010 @ 9:05 am | delete
i'm going to try this out; i'll let you know how it went.

I started transplanting my tomatoes today. I have 150 canning jars and will fill them, but I know I'll need more storage options. I never considered drying them. I'm going to give it a try.
    Thanks,
    Lizzy
