The High Wheel...What?

A High Wheel Cultivator is a neat little (okay, it isn't that little) gardening tool. Many people still call it a garden plow. However, while the cultivator not recommended for ground breaking type plowing, it is capable of light plowing, hilling, furrowing, and cultivating. The many attachments that come with your High Wheel Cultivator will allow you to complete many gardening tasks. But how do you get the best your cultivator? Well that is what we are here to discuss with you!

There's Only One Cultivator Right?

High Wheel Cultivator ComparisonWell, there are a few types of high wheel cultivators on the market. Today, we will be going over just two of the different cultivators. The Earthway 6500 High Wheel Cultivator and the Earthway 6500W High Wheel Cultivator. These two cultivators are essentially the same, however, the handles are different. The Earthway 6500 has a powder coated tubular steel frame and handles while the Earthway 6500W has solid oak handles. That's easy to remember 6500W = Wooden Handles.

Now both of these cultivators are great for use in a garden, however, keep in mind that they are not recommended to be used as a ground breaking tool. They work best in already tilled or plowed soil.

High Wheel Cultivator Attachments

Included and Extras

High Wheel CultivatorIncluded Attachments:

Five Tine Cultivator
The Five Tine Cultivator is great to use to for breaking up and loosening the soil in your garden, especially between rows. Your High Wheel Cultivator is a good size for fitting between rows that are a tad narrow.

Moldboard Plow
The Moldboard Plow attachment is a useful implement for preparing your ground for seeding.

Twin End Furrow Plow
The Furrow Plow attachment makes a furrow (or ditch/row) where you will plant seeds in your garden. The twin end furrow plow has two sides that direct the soil away from the center (this is what makes your row).

Extra Attachments

Slicing Hoe for Cultivators
The Earthway Slicing Hoe for Cultivators attachment is for weeding your garden. It makes quick work of weeds by slicing them off just below the dirt surface.

When Should I use a Cultivator?

Great Question, Let's see...

Plowing The SoilYou should use your cultivator through nearly the entire gardening process. In the first stages, you can use your cultivator to plow your broken soil, so that it is "softer" and better for the planting of seeds, looser soil is appreciated by plants, especially when they are trying to spread their roots to grow. The very best time to cultivate your soil is when the dirt is moist, not too wet or dry. Avoid cultivating the soil when the temperature is very hot, as this will cause your soil to dry out more quickly.

Once the soil is broken you may want to mix in compost, manure, or fertilizers to improve the quality of your soil for growing the best plants possible.

Then you will want to use it to furrow your rows for planting the seeds for your garden. Once your seeds are planted, you should continue to use your high wheel cultivator throughout the weeding process to keep the weeds from choking out your garden plants and ruining all your hard work.
