Did You Pay Attention in Chemistry Class? Learning How to Make Homemade Smoke Grenades is Easy!

If you have ever wondered how to make homemade smoke grenades then you have come to the right place. Here you will find a safe method for creating the ultimate smoke bomb.

There are many recipes out there but the best one consists of mixing potassium nitrate and sugar. This mixture will allow for a long burning period with at least a 4,000 cubic foot smoke output.

Once you make this smoke recipe, I think will agree with me that this is the last recipe that you will ever need to use.

There is an instructional video at the bottom of this page featuring this homemade smoke grenade recipe. Check it out and see what this thing can do.

Don't forget to add some powdered dye to give your ultimate smoke bomb some beautiful colors.

Homemade Smoke Grenade Ingredients

This recipe will allow you to make three smoke-grenades.

1) Potassium Nitrate (60 grams)
Also called Stump Remover

2) Sugar (40 grams)

3) Baking Soda (1 tablespoon)

4) Colored Powdered Dye (1 cup)
A hobby shop will be your best bet for this.

5) 5 Playing Cards or other flimsy cardboard (Toilet Paper Tube)

6) Electrical or Duct tape

7) Cotton-Balls

8) Firework Fuses or Homemade Fuse

9) Thick Pens (3)

Make Homemade Smoke With Color

You can make homemade smoke grenades with any colors that you choose

Making Homemade Smoke

To start we will want to make the "shell' for our smoke-grenade. We do this by making a cylinder from one of our playing cards. Firmly tape this together. After that is done cut the other card in half and make a bottom for your cylinder by folding and taping. Next you want to securely wrap the cardboard cylinder with tape so none of your mix will ooze out while it dries.

Alternatively, you can use toilet paper tubes wrapped with aluminum foil or duct tape for the smoke bomb shells. Please note that they will be larger and produce more smoke. Is that really a bad thing though?

Now it is time to make the smoke-mix. Place the Potassium Nitrate in your pot and then add the sugar. For those of you who may have made a caramel sauce before the procedure is exactly the same. Turn your element on LOW and constantly stir.

Make Homemade Smoke With Low Heat

There are two main reasons why we MUST use low heat. The first reason is that this mixture is designed to ignite with a firework fuse. I am sure you can imagine what would happen if it lit up in the pot. (If you cannot, just watch the video and see for yourself)

The second reason is that even if it did not ignite in the pot, your sugar would burn and lose its ability to slow the burning time of your Potassium Nitrate.

Always Make Smoke Grenades Outside On A Hotplate.
Never Indoors.

Whats Next?

After about 15 minutes of slow mixing, your mixture will start to thicken and look to be the consistency of smooth peanut butter. This is the time to remove the pot from the heat.

Now you want to add the baking soda and mix it very thoroughly. Like sugar, the baking soda will slow the combustion rate of the potassium nitrate and allow for a longer burning peroid of your homemade smoke grenade.

When that step is done add the colored powered dye and mix again.

Make Homemade Smoke Final Step

As soon as you have thoroughly mixed the powdered dye in, equally place the smoke mixture into each of the shells. Place the thick pens into the center of the mix and set aside for approximately one hour.

After the homemade smoke mix has set, remove the pens. Insert the firework fuse and gently stuff cotton into the cavity to hold the fuse in place. Stuffing it too tightly will cause the fuse to go out.

Tape up the top of the smoke-grenade and you are set.

You are now the proud owner of three new homemade smoke bombs!
