Blogging Becomes a New Career Path for Many

The word "blog" is about as common as the word "cat" these days. Everyone talks about the blogs they're reading or a new blog they discovered. They talk about their own blog or about starting a blog. But just what is a blog, anyway - and how are people able to make money blogging?

The term blog is a shortened version of web log. A web log is an online website where someone, somewhere writes short articles called posts, that are shared with an audience. Blogs can be about any topic - sports, plants, snow, politics, books, clothes, raising kids, someone's day-to-day life - anything. But the bloggers making money are those who either:

1. Create such a huge following they can charge a ton for advertising on their blog. People like Perez Hilton, whose celebrity gossip earns him $40,000 a month in ad space do well with this model. Or,

2. Blog about problems consumers have and offer advice and solutions to them. Find a starving market, blog regularly and make recommendations - it's the perfect formula for blogging success!

Blogging has exploded in recent years for a couple of reasons. One is that technology is making it easier for anyone, even someone who isn't computer savvy, to create his or her own blog. It's also a very fun way to make money with a topic that you're passionate about.

How to Blog Free

If you're thinking that you'd like to start a blog and maybe make money blogging, but you're wondering just what this is going to cost you in startup and maintenance fees, let's have a talk about how to blog free.

First, most blogging platforms (the software you use to blog) give you their services for free. Not all do, but most do, and these are good services, so you can rest easy. But many bloggers prefer total control over their blog - that's where the small cost comes into play.

You can blog for free on sites like Blogger or WordPress, but many professional bloggers choose their own domain name and a web host. Domain names cost money to register, but truly, the amount is small (under $10 a year).

There are free web hosts out there, but unless you're setting up a blog as a hobby, or an experimental blog, you might not want to go that route. When you're blogging for business and intend to make some money from your blog or you just want to really professional presentation, it's usually better to go with a web host that you pay for because you get more freedom and features. Web hosting isn't terribly expensive. Usually, it's only a few dollars a month (under $10).

You can always start out with a free blog and then move your blog onto your own domain. If you're setting up your blog to make money, you can make more than enough to cover the cost of your domain registration and hosting.

"What makes this book different from other books on blogging is it's unique focus on actually turning a blog into a vehicle for revenue.

So, for example, when it talks about choosing a topic, the focus is not just on figuring what you love to write about, but on find and choosing a niche to blog about that will give you the greatest possible chance to make money by serving a market with a strong demand for information and insight.

When Darren and Chris talk about the types of posts you can include in your blog, they focus on what readers most want to read and what is most likely to get passed around or go viral, like list and resource posts.

And, because traffic is the holy grail for monetization, they talk about blog promotion and marketing, from creating strong relationships to figuring out social-media to generating link-bait. It has one of the most detailed marketing and promotion sections I've found in any book on blogging.

There are many really good books on blogging, but this one sets the bar for blogging for income. Highly recommended. "

How to Search for Profitable Blog Niches

Are you blogging for fun or do you want to make money with your blog? Some people still don't get that blogs can be good moneymaking tools. You don't have to do anything shady or underhanded - you just need to offer your readers great information that's helpful to them.

Then offer them some products that provide solutions to make their lives a little easier - whether it's a recommendation from Amazon on the best baby stroller to buy or an eBook on how to make money online.

That's how you blog for money - a formula of good information plus smart recommendations. Before you get started, you have to know how to conduct a blog search to see which topics are profitable for bloggers.

To conduct a blog search for profitable niches, try the following strategy:

First, get a small list together of niches you're interested in. Then explore which keywords are the most used for those niches. You can do this by going to Google Adwords Keyword Tool and entering basic niche terms to find strong keywords.

After that, simply do an Internet search for your keywords and see what comes up. Take a look at blogs and websites that are associated with your niches. Is the market overrun, or is nothing coming up in your searches?

You can also look at the sponsored advertisements that show up with your searches. Are there many or few? What products are you seeing advertised in blogs and in sponsored ads over and over. Doing this kind of blog search will help you determine which niches are healthy, which are already saturated and which are getting no attention. Don't let a saturated niche turn you off - it's a good sign that there's money to be made with a blog in that area!
