Copper Pennies Worth Triple Face Value

In 1982 the US had to change the materials they used to make copper pennies, because the copper in the pennies was worth more than the penny itself. Before 1982 the US made pennies using 95% copper, because it was easy for them to get their hands on it. When the price for copper started to increase, the US looked into other ways of making the pennies so they were not as expensive to make. Right now the copper in the pennies before 1982 is worth about $0.03 which is triple what pennies are accually worth. If you start collecting many of these pennies from before 1982 and wait a few years the price is sure to increase by more. All pennies before 1982 are made of 95% copper and some in the year of 1982 are also made of 95% copper. You can figure out if your penny from 1982 is copper or not by using two methods. The first one is by getting a jewelers scale from the store and weighing your pennies. If the penny weighs 3.1 grams then it is a 95% copper penny, but if it weights 2.5 grams then it is the newer model of the penny that they still use today. Also, you can drop a penny on a hard surface, if there is a high pitched ding sound when you drop it then it is a 95% copper penny. Pennies that are not made of copper made a thumping sound when they hit a hard surface. Right now collecting these pennies may not seem like it would pay off, but when the price for copper starts to soar sky high, you'll realise that saving copper pennies was a good idea in the end.

Very interesting. Here in Australia, we phased out our 1 cent and 2 cent coins years ago, but we did have a 50 cent coin where the metal value was worth more than the face value. Worth collecting!
