Self Publish and Make Money With Kindle
'Self Publish and Make Money With Kindle' may make you think I'm necessarily talking about writing your own book. In one respect I am, but that is not the whole story. There are tens of thousands of out of copyright books that you can edit and sell on Kindle. Many people, including me, get paid every month by selling works from the public domain. For several years I'd been publishing articles on the internet to support my various websites and Squidoo pages. This did at least give me a bit of background for what was to come later.
When my brother self published his old University notes, which continue to sell well, I thought WOW! It made me think.
I'm now doing very well from the public domain and earning 35% commissions, but because he is the original author of his own work, he gets 70% commission on each sale! All I had to do was figure out what to write about. So here is the story of 'Self Publish and Make Money With Kindle', my first book as author.

A Bit More Background and the Straight Truth
I started out, some years ago, doing internet marketing full time. I've been through the apprenticeship, had all types of websites but never had true success. In the course of promoting these websites, and Squidoo pages, I started writing short articles. This was difficult for me because I am not a natural writer. In actual fact, after I'd done a few articles, I actually started to enjoy it! It didn't occur to me to write a book. I'd heard of Kindle of course, but basically ignored it as being too hard and time consuming.
When my brother told me about publishing his notes he said that prior to publishing them he did a practice run. He downloaded a free copy of Sir Izaac Walton's 'The Compleat Angler'. He edited this book and published it on Kindle. He was amazed to find that within just a couple of weeks he was actually selling copies! Now bear in mind that Walton's book was published around 1663, just shy of 350 years ago! This ebook still sells today. It doesn't make a huge number of sales but the proceeds add to his pot each month.
My mind went into hyper drive. If he could do that, what could I do? Well, the long and the short of it is that I learned how to publish public domain works on Kindle. This resulted in residual income every single month! Currently I receive a cheque from Amazon.com (I'm in the UK) and an electronic funds transfers from Amazon.co.uk. I've just received my first payment from Germany too. Once a book, either your own or an edited public domain work is on Kindle it will produce an income that should go on for years.
It would be useful I think, to qualify the payments mentioned above. As I'm in the UK I can only receive cheques from Amazon.com. The minimum amount that they will send is $100. In the last year I have missed only one monthly receipt, and that by less than $5. In the UK, as a resident, I qualify for Electronic funds transfer receipts, I've never missed receiving one. It's also interesting to note that with 60 million people in the UK, only 1/5 of the population of the US, I sell, on average, 3X more than I do in the States. I don't understand it, but Hey Ho, I don't mind that at all!
An exciting development is the opening of Kindle stores in Germany, France, Spain and Italy. I am making English language sales in three of these four countries.
Having learned all this, and proved to myself that it really does work, I decided I'd write a book about it! The book is called
'Self Publish and Make Money With Kindle'. I hope you enjoy it.
Oh, by the way - You do not need a Kindle to read my book Cick here to download your Free copy of 'Kindle for PC'. No Cost download from Amazon.

Answer: Everything you need to know
You already know about my early internet marketing efforts, I have the proof in my other Squidoo pages. I've bought into lots of 'Get Rich Quick' schemes and quite frankly, I've felt cheated. They never tell the whole story. My book tells you everything you need to know to publish either your own book, at 70% commission, or public domain books at 35%. Public Domain has amazed me, I've sold literally thousands of them. Believe me, If I can do this, then so can you.
Included in the book:-
How to 'clean and format' your own book
How to Jet Wash books from the public domain. Many of these books have so many hidden 'traps' for the unwary. I'll show you how to make them showroom clean and sparkly.
I'll show you how to navigate the hurdles that Amazon set in place on 24th March 2011, legally, no Black hat. Totally legal.
I'll give you an insight into the various copyright issues.
I'll tell you about free (as in no cost) programs that Amazon will give you to make publishing easier.
I'll tell you how to optimise your work for the search engines.
You'll get the full rundown on how to publish using M.S. Word, it couldn't be easier. And I mean without html knowledge.
I'll show you how to use Frontpage or Dreamweaver with another free program to produce your own .mobi files. (The language of Kindle)
A small section that explains how bi-lingual people, as in English / German - French - Spanish - Italian are in a position to make money from translating English language public domain works onto Kindle. I can't do this because I don't have a (fluent) second language, more's the pity.
I've also added a free bonus section. Amazon is very good by itself, but to maximise your sales and reach an even bigger audience you should indulge in a bit of self promotion. In this section I'll show you many of the places you can advertise your book. This is all free advertising. The only price you will pay is in a little of your time.
All I would suggest , if you like the idea of regular bank receipts, and are willing to concentrate and follow instructions, is give it a go. The Kindle market is massive and worth the work. Of course the real beauty of this business is that every book you add to your first one increases your income. If you use public domain works as your base, there is no reason why you cannot add a new title every week or ten days. This is a real winner.

Why You Should Do This
The Kindle has become an absolute phenomenon over recent years. It is Amazon's best selling product and millions of people have bought them. The number of sales of original books and works in the public domain is staggering. If you are receiving peanuts from other marketing interests you really must have a go at this.
In terms of public domain books you may ask 'why should I buy something that I can get for nothing from other sources?' Good question, it's one of the reasons I didn't move into Kindle until my brother told me about Sir Izaac Walton's book. What a mug I was! The answer to the 'why should I' question is simple. The editing on many public domain works is awful, and much of Amazon's free stuff is not much better. It's the editing that is the key, and that is why I make hard reference to it in the book. Copy and paste used to be the order of the day, but times change. Now we actually have to read the work! As far as I'm concerned, this should always have been the case.

In conclusion
I've found something that works, not just for me , but for tens of thousands of people around the world. What have you got to lose? I myself dismissed this idea some years ago. I was a fool. Don't mistake this as a desperate attempt to sell you a book. What I have written here is 100% the truth. These are the methods I use every day and I heartily recommend that you do the same.

- Thanks for the article. just a question: books that are on google...you know, the ones that have full preview: are they considered as "public domain" books? Would it not be illegal for me to attach a price tag on them and then sell them on Kindle?

- What a great lens. I just published an item for sale at Kindle, and have made exactly ZERO sales so far, but I have no idea how to really promote it well. (Plus, it's a short story and therefore, overpriced, but I did it for experience.) Anyway, I am purchasing your book and look forward to reading it.
