Make Money Writing - Start Your Writing Career

I make money writing for a living. And you know what? I love writing for a living and writing for money.

My career has changed much since I started back in 2002. Those were the days where people weren't even blogging that much. Ah, the dark ages.

The internet has really changed some things. And, it's taken me a while to learn how to coexist with (and without) it.

So I've been there, done that, made a few mistakes... The bottom line is I have a successful career and now I am here to help you do the same. You can start by browsing this lens.

Ghostwriting Cash - Helped Me Take My Career to the Next Level

Writing for Money

The reason why is because it helped me revamp my resume website to focus on getting ghostwriting clients. Not only that, but Tiff's inspiring words have helped me up my rates. I have been ghostwriting for years and years - it seems silly that my rates have been stuck in the novice range.

NOTE - I am no longer ghost writing. But, this still remains my favorite resource for teaching someone how to ghost write. I landed several long term clients using the advice here and it helped me overhaul my website to gain clients.

Writing for Money - An Overview

I thought I would give you a sneak peak as to the topics we will cover. Note that most of the things we will talk about pertain to making money writing online and not for print. I haven't done that kind of writing in years!
  1. Getting Your Career Started. Everything you need to know to start your freelance writing career and get gigs and clients. This will also include a nice list of websites you can use to make money with your writing. We will also talk about starting your writer's website and portfolio.
  2. Residual income. One of the big mistakes I made was that I waited too long to start working on my residual income strategies. We will talk about things such as Squidoo, Hubpages, and article marketing. In other words, this will offer some strategies on using free methods to take your online writing income to the next level.
  3. Websites and Blogs. You should already have a writer's website. Does it have its own domain or is it on a free site? At this point, you should get your own domain and also start setting up websites or blogs on topics that you are passionate about. This is also a good time to get into strategies such as Niche Blogging.

Create your Writing Portfolio

I would work on this step before doing absolutely anything else. Read on for more advice on how to create a selection of samples to show potential clients and win gigs.

Strategies for Putting Together your Writing Portfolio

Want to hear something incredibly silly? I put together my writing portfolio several years after I actually started my writing career. Now, it didn't matter at first because I was writing for magazines.

However, I think it was at least a year after I started writing for clients that I thought to put a portfolio together. Seriously, I could have saved myself a lot of hassle if I did this sooner.
  • Write Articles at Associated Content. When I started trying to find clients, I noticed that most wanted samples. So, I started writing at Associated Content and I wound up using my profile link to direct potential clients to my work.

This is the best option for people living in the United States because you could get paid for your articles. You can also make some residual earnings based on page views. Granted, the residual income payments are small, but it is still something. Once you have around 20 articles posted on a variety of topics, it is safe to say that you have a portfolio to show potential clients.
  • Use other sites besides Associated Content. Don't feel like using Associated Content? You can use any site really as long as you get your name published with your articles. Bear in mind that Associated Content can be used outside of the US, you just won't get paid.

Other sites you can use include any of the article posting sites such as goarticles.com and ezinearticles.com as well as some of the residual earnings sites like hubpages, squidoo, and infobarrel.
  • Post samples on your blog or website. If you are totally new to writing online, you likely don't have a website or blog yet. If you are using this lens to start your career from scratch, I haven't told you to start a site yet so don't sweat it.

If you do have one, you can post some samples for clients to see. You can also direct clients from your website to your articles wherever you have posted on them.

But, if you are a complete newbie, ignore what I just said here. We'll talk about creating your writer's website in a little bit.

Finding Ghost Writing Jobs

Tips on How to Find Ghost Writing Jobs

Once you have your portfolio set up, your next step is to find writing jobs. Let me start off by telling you what I did. I chose a freelance bid site and placed several bids a day until I got my first assignment.

Getting work got easier and easier. Someone who has a writing team eventually contacted me and now the majority of my freelance work comes from what the team finds for me.

There are a few ways you can do this:

  • Websites Look on specific websites to see if they are searching for writers.

  • Job postings. See if there are any postings on Craigslist or better yet, look at the listings on Freelance Writing Gigs

  • Bid Sites. Work on getting jobs from the freelance bid sites like oDesk and Elance.

  • Join a writing team. Just search online for "writing teams" and see if you can find any who are hiring.

  • Don't Get Discouraged

It may feel really frustrating at first. You could go for several months without securing a gig. But, make sure you don't give up. Your first job WILL come. Mine came after the first month, but that's only because I turned securing that first gig into a full time job.

Meaning, I posted a lot of bids each day. This is what it takes. If you say, "I posted five bids and no one hired me" that still isn't enough. You may feel like you are working hard, but just posting a handful of bids isn't hard at all.

Earn More Money Writing with These Websites

Make Money Writing with These Websites

Besides making money from your clients, you can also make money with these websites. Might I add that these websites should be used for the sole purpose of giving you experience. I've heard them referred to as "training wheels". If you come to rely on them too much, then you are setting yourself up for getting stuck in a rut and stagnating at the same income level for years and years.

We'll go over strategies for increasing your writing income as we progress.
    • Associated Content. Actually, I think it is called the Yahoo Contributor's Network now but I will always think of it as Associated Content. Besides being a good place to start your portfolio, you can also use it now and then to make some extra cash.
    • Constant Content. Some of you may remember that I've had a hard time getting articles accepted here. Well, it is as I suspected deep down in my gut - they are sticklers for following the guidelines. With each article I submit, I bet it will get easier and easier to get an article accepted.
    • Fiverr.com. You can post writing gigs on here. I know, it seems rather pitiful to get paid $4 for an article, but you can use this to draw potential clients and direct them to your profile on the bid sites or on your website where you'll charge more.
    • The Content Authority. I use this site when I need extra cash. The articles can be written fast and the higher up in the tier structure you get, the more you'll make. In other words, write great articles and wait until you get promoted to a new tier, and as always try not to get discouraged.
    • Textbroker. Similar to The Content Authority but I find the site a little confusing to navigate.
    • Blog Mutt I've started writing at Blog Mutt recently. I see the potential of this site. I'll keep you all posted.

    You Need a Writer's Website

It's almost embarrassing how long it took me to get my own site! But I have one now. Here it is so you can use it as an example. :)

How to Start and Build Your Writer's Website

So, why do you need to start a blog? Because it is an easy way to gain credibility and showcase your writing skills. If you put your best writing on the blog, you show people that you are a good writer and are worthy of getting hired.

There was a time when I used the free blog services like Blogger and Wordpress.com. I realize now how much time I wasted with them.

They didn't go anywhere and now that I have my own blog, I realize that I have a lot more creative freedom and pride because the blog is something I started from scratch.

I suggest you do the same. Here are the steps.

Find a blog host. I use Hostgator and am very happy with their service. But I've also heard good things about iPower and BlueHost, among others.

Reserve the domain. Next, you need a domain for the blog. My first "non free" blog was on the domain name that bears my name. Now I have several blogs with different purposes.

Choose a name that has important keywords for your subject in it - you'll rank better in the search engines. For example, if your blog is about writing, make sure "writing" is somehow in the url.

I use GoDaddy.com for registering all of my domains.

Install wordpress. Okay, so it doesn't need to be wordpress. It can be another platform, such as Movable Type. But wordpress has a great support pool and there are a lot of people out there who can help you out if you're stuck.

Make the blog successful. This is a big overstatement. There's a lot that goes into making a blog successful. The two things I'd start with is posting at least three times a week and somehow letting people know your blog exists.

To get started you can send an email to your friends, comment on other people's blogs, and put your blog in your forum signatures.

Now, you can sign up for other blog services. Although I don't use free blog services anymore, I do occasionally join a network, such as Today.com which is free to sign up for.

The only difference is that you can get paid for each post and you get an additional amount for page views. It's a good way to make some extra money. You can look at it as your first paying gig. :-)

You can shop around for other hosts and domain registration places. However, Hostgator and Godaddy are what I use.

Putting Joy Back in My Writing

I have been writing for so long online for clients, I've forgotten what it feels like to write a great poem or short story or something that I want to do. So, in the coming months, I am going to add into my routine things that will help me feel passionate about my writing again.

    Finding My Writing Joy

Two things to get me warmed up...

I have made it a goal to do some more creative writing and find joy in my writing once again. So, I need to spend time actively pursuing this idea. What am I going to do? I came up with a simple plan.
    1. Creative Writing Exercises. I basically purchase the Writer's Digest each month (I know, I should subscribe) and work through the articles and creative writing exercises that I find. I try to do this daily.
    2. Recap journal. I travel A LOT and I am starting to forget stuff. Plus - I tend to revisit places I like. What was the name of that restaurant we ate at in Luxembourg? Before I did this, there is no way I'd remember. No, thanks to my recap journal, I can look back. I write in it every day, even if it says, "had headache, ran errands, market was way too busy - ugh." lol
    3. 12 Month Challenge. I am not going to log my progress with it because it gives the challenge away and isn't fair to the ebook writer. Let me just say that it is simple and exciting and totally doable. I can wait to get started!
