This is a real new craft idea - Make a SOCCER BALL Pillow - with pattern and step by step pictures and instructions.

When I was teaching high school in the Philippines, I created an origami model of the soccer ball with recycled papers and a balloon. I also shared it to my co-teachers during a regional training in mathematics as one of the models of spheres in geometry.

I also demonstrated this project in one of the middle school mathematics classroom in Matsue prefecture, Japan, during the In-service training program for teachers under Monbukagakusho scholarship program that I was attending for 18 months. Now, I made another innovation of the project, it is not just a paper and a balloon but a cloth and stuffing and it is called - the soccer ball pillow.

Who inspires me to do this? I am working as a special education assistant in the Garden Island of Hawaii. I love all the kids in our class and I was thinking to a give something nice before the school year ends and as a prize for doing well in the class. I was thinking about it for few weeks and suddenly, an idea of a soccer ball pillow popped up in my head. So I tried to make one and I loved it. I made 6 soccer balls last year. The students were all so happy and thankful. When they came back to school I received a thank you note and good words from them.

This is ideal for your boy's birthday gift, son's graduation or even an additional unique pillow for your sofa. Use a feminine fabric design and color and I'm sure girls will love this too.

Characteristics of a Soccer Ball

One of the best ways to create an effective project is to understand it's characteristics:

A soccer ball has 20 regular hexagons and 12 regular pentagons.
A hexagon is regular if it has 6 congruent sides and angles.
A pentagon is regular is it has 5 congruent sides and angles.

Things you' ll need:

  • 1/3 yard black county quilt fabric
  • 1/3 yard white county quilt fabric
  • Patterns (hexagon, pentagon)
  • Needle, thread, pins, fabric marker, scissor
  • Sewing machine (optional)
  • Fabric stuffing

Tips and Warnings:

  • Soccer ball pillow model is size 4 and approximately equal to 26 inches in circumference (distance around the circle).
  • Note that the soccer ball pillow will not be so perfect depending on the maker's cutting and sewing skills as well as the amount of stuffing being used..
  • Fabric. Based on experience it works well with quilted fabrics.
  • Sewing. By hand using back stitch or by machine.
  • Pictures. The author is using different soccer ball pillow instructional images.
  • You can create your own pattern for hexagon and pentagon of any desired measurements.
  • Hexagon and pentagon might not be the exact size when you print it. This is because of software technicalities, if you think that it's too large or small, then draw your own pattern.
  • Sewing. Sew, cut or make this project at your own risk. The author is not responsible for any outcome of your project. This is just a guide or ideas on how to create a soccer ball pillow

Cutting and Sewing

Step 1. Fabric Preparations

Prepare the fabric. Fold the fabric into two then pin and trace half of the
hexagon pattern. Cut and unfold.
Choose any soccer ball pillow theme. For instance, white fabric for hexagons and
black fabric for pentagons. Seam allowance is already included in each pattern.

Step 2. Pattern Arrangements

Prepare 20 hexagons and arrange it according to the picture on the right. This
will be the sewing arrangements. Always refer to the picture if needed.

Step 3. Sewing Suggestions

Sew it according to the pattern arrangements.

I developed an easier way to connect all hexagons.
Connect (1 & 2), (3 & 4), (5 & 6), (7 & 8), (9 & 10), (11 & 12), (13 & 14), (15 & 16),
(17 & 18), (19 & 20). ------> 10 pairs

This is how I sew it. Connecting 2 hexagons and cut it out by two's.

At this point you are now ready to attach pentagons

Step 4. Attaching pentagons

Attaching a pentagon to hexagons. Place one pentagon in the middle of five hexagons. Prepare it for sewing by following numbers 1 - 5. Do the same procedure to the rest of the pentagon.

Grab a pentagon. Fit one side to the any side of the hexagon.

And sew all five sides around.

Step 5. Add stuffings

Leave one edge open for stuffing. Add fabric stuffing and then sew the remaining edge by hand.
