The idea of people using artificial light during a bright and sunny day is quite absurd. But no matter how absurd that notion sounds, most people still do this. A lot of them blame it on necessity due their houses having bad natural lighting. This should never be the case since homeowners can always install skylights. Skylights can be used to illuminate houses using natural light. These ancient innovations are basically ceiling windows. The ancient romans used this design to provide their buildings with ample natural light so that they wouldn't have to use candles during the day. Today, we can use these skylights to preserve our natural resources and save our environment.
The depletion of fossil fuel is no myth and it is one of the biggest problems that our society is facing. Although scientists are working hard to find safe yet effective alternative sources of energy, civilians must also do their best to buy time by reducing the amount of energy they consume every day. Fluorescent light fixtures have reduced energy consumption compared to incandescent bulbs but that doesn't mean that we can overuse them. It is understandable that some houses may have badly placed windows which could result in the lack of light even during the day. It is also understandable why some homeowners wouldn't want to hire architects to find out the best locations for windows based on the location of the house and subsequently renovate it. However, skylights are incredibly viable thanks to the fact that they are relatively easy to install. Also, no complex calculations are needed to find the best location for these ceiling windows since they can be put smack dab in the middle of the ceiling. So why aren't skylights being used more? It could be due the fact that the construction process is a bit costly. Or maybe most people just don't acknowledge the severity of our environmental problems.
Electric light fixtures may seem harmless to the naked eye but prolonged use of such electrical produces its signature carbon footprint. These carbon footprints are essentially greenhouse gases that can accumulate in the atmosphere and subsequently amplify the amount of infrared radiation that enters our environment. This leads to global warming which in turn leads to the melting of the polar caps. Once the polar caps melt, the water level will rise significantly and the delicate balance of the world will crumble causing worldwide chaos. This may be a worst case scenario but this situation will happen if nothing is done about the degradation of our natural environment. Most people have the misconception that they must radically change their way of living in order to contribute to the efforts to save our environment. Ironically, even the simple act of installing a skylight makes a huge ripple in the water. In fact, if everyone in the world utilized natural light during the day instead of relying on artificial light then scientists and researchers will have all the time in the world to figure out a solution to our growing energy problems.
Light is very important to humans since we rely on our sense of sight the most. Still our need for light shouldn't be an excuse for destroying our environment. The installation of a skylight isn't too much to ask. In fact, a skylight is a home improvement in terms of practicality and aesthetics. Having a skylight can give your home a historically stylish look while illuminating your house with natural light. Not to mention the health benefits of having natural light inside your house. Research shows that artificial light strains the eyes while natural light can be relatively soothing. It is quite ironic that an ancient lighting design can help our situation so much. Maybe we can learn from our ancestors and choose to live with nature in harmony instead of creating technological advancements that destroy it. Maybe one day scientists will be able to make technological advancements that have no adverse effects on our environment but until that time comes we need to do everything we can do to reduce the usage of our harmful technology. Skylights have the potential to do this but it is merely the first step. Still it is important to take things step by step.
