Make-Your-Life-Easier Kitchen Gadgets: Smooth Edge Can Opener

Ranked #16,556 in Home & Garden, #233,048 overall

I never thought I'd say I love a can opener...

...but after using the OXO Good Grips Smooth Edge Can Opener, I realized the adage is true -- you should never say never!

Please read on to see what I liked and didn't like about this make-your-life-easier kitchen gadget.

Note: It's now almost 10 months later, and I *still* love this can opener!

What I like about this type of can opener:

(Specifically my OXO Good Grips Smooth Edge Can Opener)

  • There's no sharp edge to get cut on -- not on the lid that's removed, and not on the rim on the can itself.

  • The can opener blade never touches the food, so it doesn't get icky from contact.

  • There are built-in lid-pliers so you can remove the lid cleanly and easily (but given the way the lid is cut without a sharp edge, I don't always feel the need to use that feature).

  • The OXO Good Grips handles make this tool comfortable to use.

  • As with all OXO products, they stand behind this product. If you're not satisfied with it for any reason, you can return it to them for replacement or refund. (Just contact their customer service department.)

What I don't (or didn't, but now do) like about this type of can opener:

(It turned out to be a plus)

At first I was inconvenienced by the fact that without the sharp-edged lid there's isn't a built-in push and strain option anymore -- but really, that's a good thing, because you shouldn't be using the (possibly dirty) can lid to strain your food!

Now, I just use my can strainer -- something actually built for this purpose.

Can Strainers

The exact can strainer that I use isn't listed, but many of them provide the same functionality -- allowing you to drain the liquid out of the can, and some allow for pressing into the can as well (I use this when draining tunafish cans, for example).

We have one of those. They are wonderful. I't been years since we've cut ourselves on a can lid.
