Make Your Own Biodiesel - What supplies do I need 

Before you start anything it is important that you are using appropriate safety gear. This includes a chemically resistant respirator, chemically resistant gloves and appropriate eye protection.

To make your own biodiesel you'll need these 3 ingredients - methanol, lye and vegetable oil. You'll also need a biodiesel processor, which you either buy or build your own. The supplies you use will vary depending on the amount of biodiesel you want to make, a few basic supplies for statrting out are -empty plastic bottles, duct tape, a blender and measuring cups.

  • 55 gallon drum

  • 1/2 or 3/4 Hp (small) electric motor. An electric drill will also work.

  • A belt for the above.

  • 12 inch rolled steel rod.

  • Two steel shelf brackets (for the blade)

  • 1 1/2 inch (38mm) brass ball valve.

  • A hinge and a spring to act as a belt tension device

  • 2000-watt electric water heater element.

  • A water heater thermostat.

  • 1 1/2 diameter piece of steel pipe 3-5 inches long with male threads on one end.

  • Assorted tat: angle iron, wood, screws etc.

To make 20 - 100 gallons of biodiesel will usually take between 2 days to a week, depending on your level of experience and the quailty of your biodiesel processor. Heres a basic step by step guide of what you'll need to do to make your own biodiesel.

Step one - filter your waste vegetable oil. This is done to remove any food particles and other contaminates.

Step two - heat the oil to remove the contaminating water.

Step three - find out how much lye you need to use by performing a titration

Step four - measure the amount of methanol and mix into the measured lye.

Step five - heat the vegetable oil and carefully mix methanol/lye mixture into the oil.

Step six - After this mixture settles, remove your by-product.

Step seven - Wash and dry your finished product.
