What You Should Feed Your Dog

If you really want to make your own dog food, you need to spend the time to learn how to create a good, balanced diet for your dog. The first thing you should know is what you should feed your dog.

For the most part your dog's nutritional requirements are the same as yours. Water, protein, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals ensuring your dog is getting his daily dose of each of these elements will help keep him happy and healthy. Generally speaking most dogs require a mix of different ingredients in order to make it the healthiest dog food for your Aussie.

In most cases, this means you should make your homemade dog food 40% meat, 30% fiber and 30% starch. This variable may change a little bit, depending on the breed and size of your dog, but it's a pretty consistent guideline that can be used to make your own homemade dog food. For the protein, popular choices include any kind of animal flesh or organs, eggs, cheese, beans (it's OK for a dog to be vegetarian). Any vegetable other than onions - onions are harmful to cats and dogs. Popular starches include brown rice and quick-cooking oats.

It's best to prepare the vegetables you serve your dog by steaming or baking, to retain the nutrients. Dice them into fairly small pieces before cooking them.

Cook the protein and grains as directed, and mix with the vegetables. You can leave it "chunky", or you can pulse it in the food processor to make it very fine. Allow the food to come to room temp before serving it to your dog (this also applies if you've taken food out of the refrigerator).

Many people add garlic, ground egg shells, and fish oils or flax oil to dog food, as they're all very good for dogs.

Your homemade dog food can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, or in the freezer for 4-6 weeks.

The RAW Diet

A variety of homemade dog food options are available for you to make your own dog food at home.

The RAW diet (also known as BARF, or Biologically Appropriate Raw Food, or Bones and Raw Food) has also become a popular diet for domestic canines. The idea is that it's best for the dog, because it's evolutionary, natural, and species-appropriate. Like the above dog food, it's all-natural, but for the RAW/BARF diet, nothing is cooked.

  • Bones with meat flesh attached.
  • Organs
  • Muscle
  • Eggs
  • Fruit
  • Yogurt
  • Enzymes
  • Herbs
  • Vegetables
  • Supplements and herbs
  • Cereals
As to the preferred meat, there is none. BARF proponents use beef, chicken, goat, buffalo, whatever is fresh and available. While anecdotal tales of remarkable results are reported daily by BARFers, some veterinarians have found that BARF diets can be deficient in certain required nutrients. The inability to qualitatively analyze each prepared meal may account for these research results.
