Do You Plan To Make Your Own Halloween Costumes This Year?

From the lens Make Your Own Halloween Costume.

  • AngryBaker Feb 9, 2012 @ 11:53 pm | delete
I always always sewed and constructed elaborate costumes for the kids (still do), and this year my daughter wanted to buy one. After an hour agonizing over which one.. and another 45 minutes in line...we bought one. The next day she decided she hated it. Spent 15 minutes constructing her own super hero costume. ARGH! Make your own.

I'm craft-challenged so I always buy my kids' costumes, but there's some great advice here for folks who want to do it themselves.

Wow! There are so may options her to make your own costume. I especially like the clown costume ideas. I'm glad it's not such an "old fashioned" idea too. Maybe I'm "old" but my mom made out costumes when we were kids - they were always the best :)

Someday i need to dig through photo boxes at my parents' house and find all the old Hallowe'en photos. Mom and I were rather ambitious, from the oak tree suit (I held stuffed animal raccoons and squirrels to complete the ensemble) to the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come (with a little calendar showing how many shopping days left until Christmas -- I won the "scariest costume" prize for that one without actually understanding why since it was my Mom's idea) to Will Scarlet and a Viking Dwarf. I received quite a few handmade costume trick-or-treaters on my doorstep this year, and I'll remember them better than the commercial ones, that's for certain!

Very cool!! I love making my own costumes. I've been an autograph book, Leia from Star Wars, Carmen Sandiego, a witch, and so many more! I paint faces for a living, and I highly recommend Snazaroo face paints for costumes. I also recommend garage sales and thrift shops for buying costume components! This makes your costume cheap and professional-looking! Have fun... and thanks for the great lens!

I agree with you Paul it is necessary to take a beginning sewing class before you embark upon the task of creating a Halloween costume. My mother in law was an exceptional seamstress and she made some wonderful Halloween Costumes for my son. They were so appreciated. Your clear and conscise directions make it easy for someone to create there own Halloween Costume. Nice presentation!

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm already thinking about what to dress up as for Halloween this year. I did so last year on the spur of the moment. It was an OK costume, I guess, but I'd like to plan ahead this year and come up with something better, but, at the same time, I don't want to spend much money on it. I like your idea of sketching something first. Might have to try that.

Helpful tips! Thanks, making kids costumes came to mind, but it seemed like you still were going through trouble. Thanks for some inspiration!

Thanks for taking the time to comment which is appreciated. Why not have a look at some costumes you like over at Amazon and see if any ideas inspire you to then dress it up. Or have a look at some of the links below for different costumes that you can make.

uh, any ideas on taking an old boring with costume and turning it into a wickedly awesome vampiress costume? I got a crummy witch costume at a garage sale and my 'rents said they could go to joann fabrics to dress it up a bit, but i dont know how to dress it up. All i can think of is spiderwebs on the dress but they would tear off.

I've always made my son's costumes myself, they are so original and have worth the effort! Moreover, they bring sweet memories!
Excellent lens indeed and that's why I give it 5 *****, I'll fav it and lensroll to a Halloween costume lens of mine!
    Dom.
