How to Design a Photo Poster Using Adobe Photoshop Elements
Have you ever wanted to make a poster or photo collage using your own digital photos?
While there are programs online that will create a photo collage for you, there's nothing like creating a one-of-a-kind piece yourself.
On this page you will learn how to make a photo collage using Photoshop Elements (most of the concepts are transferrable to other editing programs).
It assumes that you are familiar with the basics of Photoshop Elements, including how to re-size photos. See the link below if you need to learn the basics first!
You will learn how to add and arrange re-sized photos and text to your collage. You will see examples from my work (like the flower collage to your left) and resources online that can help in creating your poster.

My Latest Poster Design
Here is a simple poster I created from a recent trip to Prague in the Czech Republic. It consists of 9 photos plus text. Below you will find step by step instructions on how to make a poster like this using Photoshop Elements. Practice along by using 9 of your own photos.
This poster is available for purchase through QOOP. Just click on the image to go to the QOOP page.
Step by Step Instructions
for creating a photo poster
For this project, I created a new document, sized at 13"x19" and 300 dpi. This is your background layer for the poster. In this case, I left it white, which would be the default setting.
However, you could also choose a color and use the fill tool to "paint" the background the chosen color OR you could open a photo, size it to 13x19 and 300 dpi and use it for your background layer.
Note: This is just one example. Of course, you can create whatever size you want; just adjust the individual pictures accordingly.
File --> New --> Blank Document --> Set size --> Press Okay

Next, pick your nine photos. In this case, they all had to be vertical. I opened each of the photos and cropped and re-sized them to 4"x6" at 300 dpi. With this sizing, there will be one inch of white space both vertically and horizontally on the page, which equates to 1/4" between photos.

You are ready to create your poster!
Step 2 - Turn on the Grid

Turn on the grid for your new blank document by clicking on View, then Grid, so it is checked. This is an invaluable tool for spacing photos properly.
Step 3 - Add & Arrange Your Photos

Using the move tool
(usually top of the tool list), drag each of the nine photos for your poster on to the new blank document and place where you want them. You will notice that as you add a photo to the background layer, it creates a new layer, shown on the right of your screen.
Using the grid, you will leave 1/4 inch on all sides and 1/4 inch between pictures.
Rearrange as necessary. I moved pictures around a bit until I got a combination that looked good.
Final Step - Add Your Text

Decide if and what text you would like to use. Here I used the Scriptina font, which you can download from Fontspace. Click the Text tool (T) which will create a new layer. Select your font and size and type your text. Using the move tool, you can place your text anywhere you want. You can also resize the text box, bold or italicize your text.
Save the final Photoshop Elements file as a psd file, which will be large. This will preserve all of the layers in case you want to make changes in the future. To create a file for printing, click on Layer and then Flatten image and save as a jpg file. Print directly from this file or send to an online source for printing.
Note: I uploaded the final image to QOOP, where it is listed for sale.

Photoshop Elements Photo Collage Creator

Photoshop Elements also has an automatic photo collage creator with templates. I don't generally like these because I want more creative control.
But, if you would like to try it, at the top right of the Photoshop Elements screen, you will see Edit, Create, and Share. Click on Create, then Projects, then Photo Collage, and follow the instructions on the screen. Above is an example that I created using this option.
Will you try to make a poster from your photos?

- As always, you have created an inspiring page. I do not have a program on my computer for making a poster collage, but you have inspired me to look into finding one.

- Love your trip photos. I've always been into windows and doors. That pelican prose is wondrous, too. Thanks for a very valuable tutorial. Guess what I will be making today. :-) You have made it so easy that the only difficult part will be deciding which of my photos to use for a poster project. Hmmm... wild horses? Venice?
