How to Make Your Own Holiday Snow Globes

Make your own personalized snow globes!

Who isn't fascinated by the magic of snow globes? Ever since I was little, I loved to watch the snow fall gently to the bottom of the globe. Since I lived in Florida, I'd never seen real snow, which only made snow globes all the more wonderful to me! I've decided to share my instructions on how to make a holiday snow globe just in time for the season!

Snow globes are an important part of the holiday pastimes. Learn how to make your own holiday snow globes and save some money! Not only that, here on this lens, we will show you how to make a non-toxic snow globe using materials from the household. Add your own personal touches as well. Your own hand-made snow globes will bring some warmth to your home.

The Magic of Snow Globes

Ever since I was a little girl, I was facsinated by snow globes. It was like there was a little world inside of a tiny crystal ball. I loved to shake the ball and watch the snow slowly fall around the scenery. At the time, I'd never seen snow, so it was amazing to watch every time I shook the snow globe.

My family and I used to do lots of arts and crafts, especially around the holidays. It was a few years ago that made our first attempt to make our own snow globes. It was difficult to find the right combination of ornaments and a jar to fit it in. I just this year decided to take up the challenge again, because I just love snow globes.

So here's a little lesson on making your own snow globe! Hope you have fun making it with your loved ones, and that you can keep them for a long time...

Step by Step Making a Snow Globe

How To Make your Own Snow Globe

Here's the step by step instructions on making your own snow globe!

  1. Get a jar of average size. It can be a baby food jar, a jam jar, or any jar that has a good seal. Make sure to clean the jar out well.
  2. Find a holiday ornament like so to glue to the inside of the jar lid.
  3. Using a glue gun or another strong glue, stick your figurines or scenery to your liking to the underside of the jar lid.

Tip: You might want to glue a small piece of "artificial turf" to the underside of the lid for decoration. Be sure to make it small enough so it doesn't interfere with the lid closing.
  4. Fill the jar with glitter and your choice of liquid (it can be mineral oil, distilled water, etc). Be sure not to overfill it as the scenery figures glued to the lid will displace some of it.
  5. Make sure your lid (and whatever is glued to it) is dry first. Then, carefully place the lid upside down on the jar. Tighten the lid as much as possible. DO NOT FLIP OVER THE JAR YET.
  6. Use a glue gun or some other type of sealant to seal the lid and the jar together air-tight.
  7. Once the jar is sealed air-tight, you're done! Flip your jar over and shake it around (carefully) so you can see it snow!

Which material is better to use in the snow globes?

Is water simpler to put inside your homemade snow globes? Or maybe glycerin or baby oil makes the snow fall slower? You choose.

Water

Other (i.e. mineral oil, glycerin)

Denise says:

Most definitely glycerin. Only a tiny bit is needed - about 1/4 teaspoon for a babyfood jar. We called up our local infant care centers and asked them to save jars for us (our girl scout troop). We put about 1/2 teaspoon of white glitter, a pinch of silver glitter, a 1/4 teaspoon of glycerin & filled it with distilled water. They were beautiful! We spray painted the outside of the lids ahead of time. For a base we used white floral foam we cut to size to fit in the lid. We did not seal the jars. Tie with a ribbon and you're done!

In order to get a more "gentle snowfall" in my snow globe, I tend to use glycerin, which is actually just soap. It works well and it's cheap!

Kelly says:

It's better for the glitter or "snow" if the globe is filled with mineral oil.
