Everyone's favorite Glee villian - Coach Sue Sylvester

If you're the kind of person who always wants to dress as the villian, there is is no better choice than Sue Sylvester from Glee. A Sue Sylvester costume is easy to make, subtly evil and you'll get to act obnoxious, snide and superior the whole time. What's not to love?

Getting the Coach Sylvester look isn't that difficult, but the attitude (which is the most important part) can be. Think you have it in you to be Sue Sylvester? We'll see!

“I will no longer be carrying around photo ID. Know why? People should know who I am.”

Get a Quick Jump Start on Sue Sylvester

The official costume gives you three basic pieces to start

I've made it pretty easy to figure out your own Sue Sylvester costume, but I just ran across an official Glee Sue Sylvester Adult Halloween Costume that gives you a jump start on the look. But ... also makes you a little conformed because everyone who gets this one will have the same red track suit.

Still, it's relatively inexpensive - just $29.97 at Walmart.com - and includes the track suit and the wig, reducing a lot of thinking. Walmart offers free site to store shipping as well, which I've always found a nice benefit. The track suit has the Glee logo on it rather than an athletic apparel brand and comes in sizes small to plus.

Make your Sue Sylvester costume just that much better (and a bit more unique) by adding in a few of the accessory items I've suggested.

The Essentials of a Sue Sylvester Costume

It's the track suit - Pick a color, any color

Sue Sylvester is all about the track suit. We can count on one hand the times we've seen her in something else (and it wasn't always pretty). She even wore one (sort of) for her wedding to herself, if you can believe it. It's the core of any Sue Sylvester costume - matching top and bottom, white tank top underneath, tennis shoes.

Once you have the outfit, you have to work on the attitude. Sue is superior, snide, sarcastic and very, very witty. Her one-liners are stingers delivered with complete sincerity and dripping with venom. Work on getting your sneer in place.

Accessories are pretty simple and mostly optional, although we'll look at a few that can just tip your costume from good to great to just as superior as Sue herself.

“I'm about to projectile express myself all over your Hush Puppies.”

Get Your Matching Track Suit

Sue has worn numerous colors of track suits in the two seasons of Glee - everything from pink to black to green to white. So pretty much any color of track suit will work. The key thing is that you have to have a matching pant and jacket set. Must. Won't work otherwise. You'll just be a standard, ordinary high school coach then.

Sue's favorite brand seems to be adidas; it's the one we see most commonly, specifically the adidas Originals Firebird Track Suit. It's available in men's and women's styles, the big difference beyond fit being the color selection. Sadly, none of those colors is pink. But still, good selection of colors.

If your suit has a collar, try popping it up for additional attitude.

“I thought I smelled cookies from the tears of elves weeping that live in your hair.”

Sue's wedding dress would be awesome, but hard to replicate.

Accessories You Need to Be Sue

The cool thing about coach accessories is that you're more likely to have them on hand. Or they're easily borrowed. Everything but the bullhorn. (And if you actually own one of those, I hope you have a good reason!) I liked the look of this Pyle-Pro bullhorn for Sue. It has a strap to make it easy to keep track of at a party and includes a siren to really get people's attention. Although, you're Sue. You shouldn't need it.

The rest is pretty simple. Add in a clipboard for your Cheerios tryouts - you could walk around judging people's costumes for full effect - a stopwatch and a whistle. You might want to pick and choose among these as you only have so many hands.

“What's that smell? It's coffee. It's usually masked by the smell of fear.”

The zoot suit is my fave, but not as obviously Sue.

“You are about to board the Sue Sylvester Express. Destination: Horror!”

Bonus Point Items for a Sue Sylvester Costume

None of these items are required by any means. But they can add more authenticity to your Sue Sylvester costume or just some hilarity. Start by heading down to the 7-11 and getting a slushy - red seems to be the color of choice on Glee - and threaten to toss it on anyone who crosses you. The hair isn't a key feature of Sue's character, but if you want, add a blonde feathered wig to make you look more like her. (Frankly, she doesn't care much about her hair, so why should you?)

The only accessories we ever see Sue wearing are her megaphone charm necklace, a class ring on her left hand and occasionally reading glasses. Take them off often and glare at people. Oh, and of course, the headband set she and Olivia sported in their "Let's Get Physical" video; perfect touch if you're going with a baby blue track suit. It'll identify the real Gleeksters in the crowd.

Again just on the fun factor, see if you can find a big, huge, Sue-worthy trophy. One as tall as you would be best. If you have an in with a local coach, you might be able to borrow one, because who besides a school would have one? And turn your Sue impression into a group costume by getting some friends to dress up as Cheerios and follow you around.

This would be great fun. I may even have one of those original Adidas track suits. As far as the attitude, well, I'm not so sure about that.

I'm not sure how many 'Sue's' she'd want running around for Halloween, but a great and simple costume idea, one that I included on the Glee Halloween Costumes as well.
