How To Make Your Own Vision Boards

With the dawning of The Secret people became aware of the power of intention and how it could shape lives for the better. Since these technologies first came to light there have been more in depth programs that explore the subject in greater detail and reveal some forgotten elements. Rather than focusing on the law of attraction on a superficial level it's now widely recognized how The 11 Forgotten Laws embraces the principles in a more holistic way.
Regardless of whether you follow the subject in more or less depth, the power of intention and the laws of attraction can be hefty tools to have in your armory, if only to clarify your focus and make you feel good about life. Making a Vision Board, sometimes referred to as a Dream Board, makes the vision of your intention a real physical object which you can refer to and check in to in order to see your progress. It works well in conjunction with goal setting and allows you to play with your future in a guilt free and blue sky way. Here are a few points to think about when you make your first Vision Board.

Why Make Your Own Vision Board?

From a very early age we're allowed to play and be imaginative. As we grow older and life becomes more serious we're trained to limit the amount of time we spend playing. Effectively we're taught that nothing worthwhile can be achieved through any activity that doesn't involve productivity. Some people are granted permission to play because their playful behavior can be interpreted as productive. Poets, musicians, authors and artists are all tolerated by society if they're successful and allowed to play with their creativity as long as it bears fruit. The less fortunate ones who suffer for their art without gaining recognition or remuneration are seen slightly more critically and often have to give up their passion to follow a more sensible course - or suffer the consequences.
If you find yourself in a daily existence that drains your creativity and allows you little time to dream or play then a Vision Board will restore that ability to you. Not only will you have the chance to dream about a future which may some day become a reality because you're setting the scene to use such programs as The 11 Forgotten Laws, but the very process of making the board, decorating it and presenting it artistically is a creative process that is close to the heart of the power of intention. If the thought of being creative fills you with dread - don't panic! This is your recreation time and you can do whatever you like, from a bulleted list to a 3D panoramic model, whatever you choose to create as your Vision Board is right for you. The intellectual property is yours to do as you will.

What You Need to Make Your Own Vision Boards

It's an unrestrained process that has no prescribed set of components. But if you want a few pointers on how to start then here's a handy list of what's great to get the creative ball rolling. You don't need all or any of this stuff but if you plan to make your board interesting and write on it then some of it will be useful.
  1. A large flat surface that you can write on, stick things to or pin things onto. A large piece of blank paper or card, a portable whiteboard or a pin board is ideal. This will form the base surface of your board.
  2. Scissors, modeling knife, ruler, glue, blue tack, drawing pins, paper clips and anything else you think may be useful for attaching stuff to your chosen base surface.
  3. Brightly colored thread (thickish wool rather than cotton), insulation tape, copper wire, electrical wire or anything else that you think will be useful and look good connecting things together. Clothes pegs can also be useful for clipping several cuttings together.
  4. Colored post-it notes, book indexing tabs, card price labels like the ones used for shop sales. You can also get these in the shape of speech call-outs or thinking bubbles which is great to portray the concept on the board with your thoughts or opinions.
  5. Any and all forms of paper literature you can get your hands on. This will form the basis of your creative process and give you the inspiration for how your vision takes shape. So make sure you include newspapers, magazines, catalogues, periodicals, books (you don't mind cannibalizing), comics, old CD covers, flyers pushed through your door - anything that may have something to inspire you!
  6. A colorful assortment of felt tip pens or markers. A selection of highlighter pens.
  7. Your uninhibited capacity to create and be inventive.

“Make it big! Make it bold! Make it colorful! Make it attractive to you!”

Make Your Own Vision Board - YOUR OWN!

Once you have all the bits and pieces assembled that will help you make up your Vision Board, grab the first magazine or newspaper you find and just start turning the pages. The second you have a flicker of interest in something get your scissors and cut it out. It doesn't have to be relevant, serious, applicable, attainable, realistic, practical or any of the other things we're taught to value as core motivators. It just has to cause some reaction in you. Go for the positive reactions rather than anything negative. We're trying to create a positive scaffolding here! As soon as you're finished with the first magazine move onto the next one. Don't worry about what you've clipped or what you're going to do with it. Put all your clippings together in one pile and you can sort them out later. Pay no attention to any criticisms your inner voice may give you that people will think you're silly for picking this or clipping that. It's not used to you playing like this so it will take a bit of time for it to give you the space and freedom to work alone.
Remember that this is a form a brainstorming. Ever brainstormed at work? Yeah, you got it! Just keep chucking out those ideas and the possibilities will start piling up into a well of creativity that'll shape the final project. Thinking and using your mind creatively is all part of the process that makes the laws of attraction such a fundamentally spiritual practice.

Make Your Own Vision Board Important

Once you've got your collection of cuttings - they can be in any form such as words, colors, scribbles, pictures or photos - start to go through them again and pick out the ones you feel most attracted to. This is your chance to dream and to think big. No one is saying that you have to achieve any of this stuff or that you have to plan to do any of it. You're simply setting the scene for what you'd like to attract into your life. You can even sort the pictures into a couple of different piles to reflect how important you see the images. If you have a really strong reaction you may want to just go ahead and post it straight on the board. Again, there's no right or wrong way to do this and you can paste it anywhere you want. Nothing is set in stone and you can always change it later.
Once you've sorted through the cuttings again take what you value as the most important pile and just start sticking them on. If there are a few images or cuttings on a similar theme you may want to paste a clothes peg on the board and clip them all together. Get as much up on the board as you can and fill up the spaces.
If there are related themes or a clear progression that you can see then here's the point when you'll want to start connecting stuff with colorful thread or wire. This will help you to focus your thoughts and see the relevance of those connections as the universe starts to present you with the opportunities to make things happen.
It's all good training for the higher discipline of tuning into the power of the universe with a more focused mind.

Your Own Vision Board and Your Needs

Here's the point where you start to put it all together. Now you've got the basis of the Vision Board with your pictures, words (however you want to represent them is fine) and connections if you want to do that, you can go mad jotting down your comments, thoughts, hopes, dreams and aspirations that arise from the pictures on the price cards, post-its and book indexing labels. Make it as explicit or as cursory as you like. If you're a very visual person then you may not even need to do it. Mose people, however, will like to add the odd word here or there to clarify something. If you have a photo of someone lying on a beach you might want to add in colorful felt tip markers the word "tranquility". it's really up to you. But try to make it bold and colorful. These are the signals that our brains pick up more easily.
The scene is now set for the laws of attraction to start playing a part. It really is that simple. You'll start to notice coincidences in your life, opportunities that you never knew existed will suddenly become apparent to you. By allowing yourself to play and be creative in this way you'll also learn an awful lot about your core values and what's important to you. We all live according to six human needs and you may well see a pattern forming that will guide you to finding a life more suitable to what makes you happy.
Once you've finished your first session (the board is a constant process of updating and adjusting) put the board somewhere you'll see it regularly and just check in on it from time to time. There's really no need to spend hours meditating on it or chanting but you do need to spend a bit of time dreaming about just what it may be like to have some of your chosen images in your life. It also helps to make this as multi-dimensional as possible. The way we use sounds in our daily lives is so important so you might like to play some music that makes you feel good as you ponder the imagery. Burn some incense if that's your thing or use some scented oil that you like. Sit in a comfortable chair and close your eyes to imagine how life would be if all this that you dreamed were to come true. And as you sit and imagine this, see it, smell it, taste it and feel the reaction in your body as it fills up with the positive energy of intention.

The Six Human Needs

Which ones are most important to you?

As you start to paste the imagery onto your Vision Board you may see a pattern emerging that will highlight which needs are most important to you. This will help guide you in many areas of your life and may even focus your goals more clearly. Here's the list as identified by Tony Robbins.

Everyone can invent their own vision boards. They can even be virtual, created in one's mind, on the computer, by painting or any kind of crafting, writing or in any other way. Nicely done lens and a great reminder, thank you! :)

Interesting lens -- I'm not the kind to buy into this kind of thing, but I REALLY like the way you write and this is a good-looking lens. Thanks!

I love vision boards and THEY WORK. I can honestly say my office is covered in vision boards and new things and ideas get pinned up very regularly. As to the human needs question above the most important thing for me is happiness. With thanks and appreciation. Cathi
