Can you recomend a "starter kit" that is not going to be all junk. I understand about the kiln,I thought i would start off trying to use vermiculite or a blanket until i got good at the craft. Can you recomend!! thanks
  • NicholeB Oct 17, 2010 @ 11:15 pm | delete
Vermiculite/blanket for cooling beads is sufficient for practice beads, but as soon as you want to make beads to wear and to sell, you are going to need a kiln.

As far as a starter kit, I would check out the "big" vendors such as Frantz or Arrowsprings and see if they have one. I believe I purchased my starter kit from Arrowsprings in 2001 or so, and it came with a variety of glass, tools, and a couple of books. Perhaps some others can chime in on a good starter kit?

OH! Wonderful lens! Yes indeed it gets FIVE BEADED STARS from me!
    ...and some cookies (tee hee)

    Kathy's Chocolate Chip Cookies

    Cream together:
1 cup 'real' butter (not margarine!)
    1 1/2 cup sugar
1 1/2 Tbl. black strap molasses
    1 tsp. salt
    add and blend two eggs
don't overdo this part or your cookies will turn out weird.

sift together then fold into sugar mixture:
2 1/2 cups flour, 1 tsp. baking soda

add and mix to above mixture:
    1 cup coconut
    3/4 cup old fashioned oatmeal
    2 full cups chocolate chips

Bake at 325 degrees for about 12 minutes. Use only an old junkie cookie sheet... not one of the new ones, they tend to make these cookies cake. Take the cookies out 'just a hair BEFORE they are done'. Let them finish up after they come out of the oven.

UMT: It isn't just the "woman folk" that are making beads! Masters such as Tom Holland, Loren Stump, and many new experts such as Dustin Tabor and Trey Cornette make exquisite glass beads, albeit more "manly" then most of the beads shown on this lens.
  • UMT Mar 17, 2008 @ 7:20 am | delete
With this piece, a little piece of creativity would be the best way to go. A good one for the woman folk.

The crock full of vermiculite will *cool* your beads, but they will not be annealed. To be annealed, they need to "soak" at a certain temperature (around 940-960) for an extended length of time, then the temperature needs to be ramped down slowly. Annealing removes stress fractures; verm. doesn't

Thanks for all the cool information and lovely eye candy!!
    Super job!
