I have put on here what I use personally. I have had nothing but headaches with AVG, never tried Avira. All I know, is that whenever I use a "free" program, they leave out features that you need so you have to upgrade to the paid version, or they are not very good. So say what you will, but I am telling people what I use because I know it works. A lot of people don't like Norton, but I have never had any problems with it.
  • Phrophet May 25, 2012 @ 11:40 am | delete
Are you a sales rep?........These progs are awful, in fact there are many free progs out there that do a much better job, Norten is crap and free Avg or Avira are much better, it just seems like you are trying to advertise to people who are new to computers, at least be unbiased and give them options.

Wow, the suggestion on using external hard drives never came to my mind. Thanks.
  • jnadenik Apr 17, 2012 @ 1:08 pm | delete
This was awesome! The only suggestion I have would be to put things in best order. ie: disk clean prior to defrag. - but maybe your intention was for the folks that would only do the top three items. Or to combine the items that you use Control Panel for. You can connect by saying see #X for more. This way people only go in that area once and clean up everything. How about telling folks how to clear up cookies & temp files too.

    Am Osee Enos Solomon.
With a program on how to make a computer run faster, i was also one time eager to seriously "Bang" my computer down within a tinkling of an eye!! it was doing crazy things, very slow, but i found out some tricks; adding what we call video card in a motherboard to increase its virtual memory is also very important, secondly, themes usually use heavy virtual memory, that communicates with ram, a theme contains colours and designs for the beautiful display appearance, so to display those colours, it uses heavy task that even slows down the system, however, with the theme without colours, is just a matter of clicking anywhere on the desktop, then properties, on theme tab, click on "windows classic" then apply, wait and then click ok button!!!!!

Excellent advice, I have used all 10 tips and it has increased the speed of my computer emensely!!!! I would recomend everyone follow these tips to improve their computers performance! I also am not a big fan of Norton, however, I have been very satisfied with Trend Micro products and have been using them for several years now. I would recomend Trend Micro Titanium, works great. It is a liitle expensive, you will save if you sign up for a two year subscription. Thanks for the great advice!!!
  • dani3l Jun 9, 2011 @ 12:45 pm | delete
Very nice, I couldnt have said it better, Only I disagree about Norton. My experiences with Norton have been very slowwwww. I much prefer Microsoft Security Essentials, its free and is much less intrusive, I hate Norton's popups.
  • DinaDLG Jun 2, 2011 @ 6:44 pm | delete
Very instructive! I use ccleaner that I get from cnet... it's a registry cleaner and a temp file cleaner as well. You can also use it for defragmentation and startup programs. An all in one! lol Of course it's free though, and you get what you pay for, so it's good to know how to check up these things on the computer the 'hard' way.

Hi MIke! To be honest my friend, most producers of software or programs these days pretty much assume that most people are running at least 500 MB+ of RAM on their PC. You should find a 1 GB stick of compatible RAM and do a quick upgrade on your computer. You will notice a HUGE change in speed especially when using multiple programs.

If you just can't upgrade the RAM and need something to protect yourself try this.

    http://www.eset.com/home/nod32-antivirus

If you look at the bottom it only requires 44MBs of memory to run. That will be your best solution. Thanks for the question Mike!

How do I find an antivirus that fits on a laptop (hp compaq nx9010) that has say 150 MB of RAM...my PC has 195 MB and when I try to add Norton antivirus it consumes too much RAM...HELP!!)
  • ElitePoetz Oct 25, 2010 @ 3:24 pm | delete
Google "panda cloud" antivirus. It's a cloud-based antivirus program that consumes very little system resources. The only catch is that you'll need to remain online for it to be effective.

WOW!! took me a long time because my computer is slow.. lol I knew how to do a few of those things already.. but I use my computer for gaming mostly.. It has grown slow from how fast I blow past these games. Fixed my registry, and the autostart (didn't know I could remove that) and now it's fine ^.^ THANK YOU!!

BTW, I'm a huge skeptic of the comments.. My name is Ben and I AM A REAL PERSON!! LOL

@RX Hey man, I'm sorry it has not worked for you. There have been a few times where I saw computers that were just well beyond saving. But I have also seen registry fix work miracles. I would try the registry fix and if that does not work you may have to do a hard boot. Clean your system completely and start new. If that doesn't work you may have to bite the bullet and get a new computer.
  • Rx Jun 3, 2010 @ 11:49 pm | delete
This is sad. It seemed to work 100% for everyone. My computer is still slow...the only step I didn't do was the registry fix. Should I wait a little while before I see the improvement? It is very good though. You explain everything very well! A lot better than the other stuff I read.

You are a god lol. Thanks for the help with getting my dinosaur going again. No more lag and I don't get kicked out of games for lagging too much

I appreciate your honesty, I really do. However I have tried "free" programs before. And believe me you get what you pay for. Believe it or not, I downloaded one of the free programs before and my anti-virus shot up like 3 alerts of different viruses it was loaded with. That way it can detect them and it makes it look like its working. Then it tells you to get rid of the viruses you must upgrade to the paid version. The ones I have showed you are tried and true, ones i KNOW work.

One of the things I didn't see was some of the freeware available online (thats not too bloated) so users can get an idea if that particular area is the cause of the slowing. Tools like AVG for free and Spyblaster just to name a couple are readily available. Of course, they may or may not be as great as some you pay for. That is an opinion thing. I really enjoyed your writing. Excellent job, and I am rating it. Please feel free to check out any of my lenses and let me know what you think. Steve
