Make Your Own Toothpaste

You may want to make your own toothpaste if you want total control over the ingredients in your toothpaste and want to be sure the toothpaste is fluoride-free. You may want to make your own toothpaste because you want your toothpaste to be a particular flavor. Another reason to make your own toothpaste is because you ran out of your usual toothpaste and just really need some toothpaste... now! Whatever your reason, here's a recipe for you.

Natural Toothpaste Ingredients

baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)

salt (sodium chloride)

water

glycerin (usually sold in the pharmacy section)

oil of peppermint, spearmint, cinnamon, clove (very small amount), or other flavoring oil (optional)

How to Make Natural Toothpaste

Mix three parts baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) with one part table salt (sodium chloride).

Add three teaspoons of glycerin for every 1/4 cup of dry mixture.

Add enough water to make a thick paste. If desired, a few drops of peppermint oil or other flavoring oil may be added to improve the taste.

Apply to toothbrush and use just as you would any other toothpaste.

Store unused toothpaste at room temperature in a covered container.
