Create Your Own Signature Perfume Scent

It's easy to create your own signature perfume scent, plus you'll save money, express your creativity, and have a product that you know is free of potentially harmful synthetic chemicals. You only need a few easy-to-find materials, plus making perfume is fun. Giving perfume that you made especially for the recipient is a thoughtful and personal gift, plus you can craft perfect perfumes for yourself.

Easy Perfume Recipe

It's extremely easy to make your own perfume. You only need oil, water, and alcohol! The 'trick' is to choose a pleasing combination of fragrance oils.

Perfume Ingredients

  • 1/2 ounce joboba oil
  • 2-1/2 ounces vodka
  • 2 tablespoons distilled water
  • 25 drops essential oils
You will also need a dark-colored bottle and a coffee filter. The essential oils form the basis for your fragrance. The jojoba oil is called the carrier oil and it is used to help disperse the fragrance oils in the water and vodka. The essential oil is divided equally among what are called the 'notes' of the perfume, so you want to add 7-8 drops of top notes, middle notes, and base notes, plus perhaps a drop of two of bridge notes to create a balanced scent.

Perfume Base Notes

Base notes and middle notes are the foundation for your perfume. Base notes consist of essential oils that linger on your skin for a lasting scent. You generally start to smell them about half an hour after you apply a perfume.

  • cinnamon
  • patchouli
  • sandalwood
  • vanilla
  • moss

  • geranium
  • lemongrass
  • neroli

  • jasmine
  • lavender
  • lemon
  • lime
  • neroli
  • orchid

Perfume Bridge Notes

Bridge notes, such as vanilla and lavender, help unify a scent.
