On Becoming a Giant 100 Squid

Ranked #4,204 in Squidoo Community, #308,405 overall

Two Years After Joining Squidoo...

Working towards and acheiving the rank of Giant 100 can seem like a daunting task. But hard work, creating quality lenses with original content, and participating in the Squidoo Community all help when it comes to reaching your goal. Learn how I went from Fresh Squid Newbie to Giant 100 Squid in just two years!

The Beginnings of a Squid

How I Started Out

Although I was certainly not new to the Internet, Squidoo was completely unheard of to me. A friend of mine had joined Squidoo in early 2007 and was working hard to build lenses. She would talk about it and I admit my curiosity got the better of me.

At first glance I wasn't sure what to think! This was certainly something much different then what was already being done (and done to death) and the idea of everyday people building a lens and talking about something they loved or knew about seemed similar to a website but far easier. I was familiar with websites and coding HTML but the ease of Squidoo was too good to be true!

So I signed up on September 4th, 2007, and haven't looked back since!

I instantly immersed myself in the co-brand SquidBoo. Halloween is a favorite holiday of mine and writing lenses about costumes came pretty easy. I also tackled some of my favorite musicians and bands, a couple of my favorite movies, and other interesting topics I thought readers might enjoy.

Pretty soon I had about 20 lenses. Some I worked hours and even days on; others wrote themselves they were so simple. By the end of the year I had nearly 30 lenses and had established myself comfortably. My first four months on Squidoo had hooked me!

I heard Squidoo mentioned on an eBay Store discussion board and after quite some time, finally decided to check it out. I wasn't sure what a lens was, so brought my camera just in case :-)

ajgodinho says:

Well, I kinda found it as I was doing some online research. But was able to get a lot of help through the wonderful lenses, especially the ones in the Answer Deck.

WindyWinters says:

I was surfing the net looking for online stuff and came across some videos about making a lens "the big orange fish eyeball." I had no idea what they were talking about or what they were promoting so I made a bunch of SquidWho lenses.

PositiveChristian says:

I found a link on a Website that said I could make loads of money here. Thankfully I've discovered that there is far more value in Squidoo than just making money. In fact the money side of it is bottom of my priorities here now.

aj2008 says:

I found Squidoo when I was looking for ways to make money online, but since I joined I had a lot of help.

_Joan_ says:

I saw an online profile about Seth Godin and went to check out his brainchild.

Someone introduced me to Squidoo and I've had lots of help!

strato says:

I start the first lens as an experiment, to see how it is to be a Squid. My second lens --that's all-- came a month ago. I had a lot of help watching a video how-to-Squid.

The_Health_Lady says:

I read an article by Tiffany Dow (writertiff) and have never looked back

vallain says:

I kept hearing eHow writers talk about it, so I finally wandered over and tried it out. Didn't have sense enough to visit the forums or SquidU, but some lensmasters helped me with some tips when I asked how they handled their graphics.

Pukeko says:

I found it on the Zazzle forum. It seemed like a good way to promote my Zazzle items. Then a friend spotted me here, and invited me to rocket moms, and thats when I really got into it, I could vote either way.

stargazer00 says:

I heard of Squidoo through BzzAgent but didn't get started until a couple of years after that.

Treasures-By-Brenda says:

eBay radio introduced me to Squidoo.

Just Starting on Squidoo?

Here's Some Tips!

  • When you're starting out, don't be afraid to ask questions! There's Squid Greeters, Mentors and Angels that are here to help you!
  • If you don't know where to start, search Squidoo! There's loads of lenses that give tips on how to get started on Squidoo and how to use the modules, as well as other tips and tricks to get traffic to your lenses.
  • Say 'Hi!' on the SquidU forum! Yes, it can seem overwhelming but jump on in! Introduce yourself! Don't be shy!
  • Look at other peoples' lenses! The Giant and Giant 100 Squids are lensmasters who are creating the best lenses Squidoo has to offer. Use their work as inspiration!
  • Make sure you read the Squidoo guidelines and TOS, as well as the SquidDon'ts! Know the difference between something "spammy" and unique and useful content! It will keep you on the "right" path when making lenses.
  • Start out making a lens about something you love! Choose a favorite movie and talk about it, give a review! Tell the world about your hobby! Share your favorite recipe for dessert! There's thousands of ideas you can get started with.
  • Go at your own pace! Squidoo is not a race; everyone works at their own speed. Start out slow and work on just a couple of lenses, really polishing them and getting the feel for how Squidoo works. When you feel good about them, publish them!

Going It Alone is Rough!

Reaching Giant Squid Status

Through the early part of 2008, I was pretty much swimming along with 30 lenses under my belt. Lots of changes (most for the better!) came to Squidoo and the site was growing by the day. Although I maintained my lenses, building new ones wasn't priority.

Don't get me wrong -- I was making a lens here and there. In fact I had started to notice the Giant Squid badges on peoples' profiles and thought it would be kind of neat to make 50 lenses. But other things had taken precedence in my life and Squidoo was sort of on the back burner.

In June I received an email asking if I wouldn't consider working towards the level of Giant Squid. I was certainly flattered someone thought I had the potential to reach that status, that my lenses were quality content. Although I had gone back to college in March I undertook the challenge and worked hard. Pretty soon I had 50 lenses and sent in my application.

On July 2nd, 2008, I received an email congratulating me on making Giant Squid!

Reaching Giant Squid was hard. I knew a few people on Squidoo, but I wasn't an active participant in the SquidU forums, and those I knew were merely acquaintances. I was pretty much swimming alone in the dark a lot of the time, learning by trial and error. Although it was a hard won accomplishment, sometimes I wish I'd had a mentor to guide me.

Working Towards Giant Squid Status?

Here's Some Tips!

  • If you've started to get comfortable with how Squidoo works and you've got 10 excellent lenses under your belt, you might want to consider starting on the road towards Giant Squid status.
  • If you don't have a Squid Mentor, get one! Having someone to talk to helps a lot! Check out the Squid Greeters and the Squid Mentors program! Or ask a fellow lensmaster you know! Chances are they'll be happy to help you out!
  • Create goals! Keep a Text file or Word document and keep track of your progress! But remember spontaneity can strike at an time, so allow for that random idea that pops into your head!
  • Learn to use the "Labels" on your Dashboard. Separate lenses by tags, grouping them into categories. The more lenses you make, the harder it can be to keep track of who needs updates.
  • Don't let Work In Progress (WIP) lenses sit on your dashboard. If you don't get to them with in, say, a month of creating them, delete them!
  • Talk to other lensmasters who are working towards Giant Squid status! Networking is so very helpful!
  • Start visiting other lenses and rating them! Leave comments in guestbooks! Let others know you're involved in the Squidoo community. This is another factor looked at when lensmasters apply for Giant Squid status.
  • If you see something that needs to be fixed, spelling or grammatical errors, or something else, send that lensmaster an email through their "Contact" button. Be helpful, don't discourage! Don't point out their mistakes or errors in their guestbook.
  • If you visit others, more often than not they will visit you in return! It's a great way to get your lenses out there!
  • Study up and learn about SEO (search engine optimization) and make sure your keywords (the primary tag on your lens) are helping your lens get ranked by search engines (Google, Yahoo, etc.)
  • Remember: any progress you make will always count towards the goal! So if you don't make Giant Squid your first time, you can keep trying! And it will always be a great accomplishment, no matter when you achieve it!

With a Little Help From Friends

Shooting for Giant 100 Status!

By the end of 2008 I was hovering just below 60 lenses. I had gotten a bit burned out -- working towards Giant status had exhausted me of ideas and I was going to school full-time -- and I didn't do much more then make a few costume lenses for Halloween 2008.

Although I kept my lenses updated when I could, I was growing frustrated with Squidoo. I'd spent a lot of time working hard and pouring effort into my lenses but I seemed to swimming in circles out in left field. Occasionally I'd receive a comment on a lens from another Lensmaster but I was pretty much doing my own thing. I felt awkward at the SquidU forums, as jumping into conversations can be tough, especially when you don't really know your fellow Lensmasters.

One night in July I poured out my frustrations into a post on the Chatter Box. If I was good as I was occasionally being told, then why was I not getting noticed? What was I doing wrong? How could I stop being frustrated and feeling like all my efforts on Squidoo were wasted?

Thankfully, lensmaster AJ2008 contacted me and asked if I might consider joining her team on the Giant Squid Challenge for September 2009. After a few emails, I signed up with the Jolly Judicious Jetsetters-2 and was assigned under AJ's Jugglers. We had a small group within the JJJ-2 and we were all experienced lensmasters who got on very well. For the first time in ages I felt like I belonged on Squidoo and quickly set to work on making batches of new lens in preparation for applying for Giant 100 status.

I ended up making a total of 50 lenses in roughly two months. Looking back, I can see where I might have bitten off more than I could chew at times; I only needed 38 lenses when the challenge started in August 2009, but I had several ideas I'd been working on plus there's always the inevitable "ooo that's an idea!" lens that pops up unexpectedly. But I certainly had the support of my teammates and benefited from working in a group where I know people visited my lenses and let me know I was doing good work.

It's certainly true that a little encouragement and praise can go a long way. I no longer felt like an outcast or loner, but more like a valuable member of the Squidoo Society. I learned that encouragement and praise are a two-way street; always pass it forward!

On my second Squidaversary I applied for Giant 100 status. On October 5th, 2009, I received an email letting me know I had indeed made my goal. Now I'm an official Giant 100 Squid!

Going for Giant 100 Status?

Here's Some Tips!

  • Congrats on reaching Giant Squid status! 50 lenses is an impressive feat!
  • Going for 100 can be just as tricky as going for 50; a lot of work. But remember, if you don't make it the first time, try try again! All your lenses will count towards the final goal.
  • If you feel really established on Squidoo, you might consider starting a blog. Let people know of your progress, your lenses, and tips and information that have helped you on your path of success!
  • Conversely, maybe think about getting a Twitter account to talk just about Squidoo on. Tweet about other lenses you find! Get the word out about great Squidoo content!
  • Remember to set new goals. If you have 50 lenses or just 1 to make before reaching Giant 100, goals are necessary!
  • Creating unique, useful, and original content can be hard some times. Take breaks from Squidoo when you feel overwhelmed or burned out. Stepping back allows your creativity to rest and recharge.
  • Explore the Co-Brands: SquidLit, SquidWho, SquidBoo, SquidZippers, MonkeyBrain, SquidVids, etc! Try something new for those new lenses.
  • Keep rating and visiting other lensmasters' lenses! Leave guestbook comments! Show you're involved!
  • Get excited and celebrate when you reach 100 lenses! That's an accomplishment in and of itself!

#8 Samudra the Elephant

Thank you for honouring my lenses with these awards! I am truly grateful!

I've worked to involve myself in the Squidoo community, by participating on the SquidU forums and also was granted SquidAngel status in October 2008. I hope to reach out to other lensmasters like myself, who feel alone and in the dark in the wilds of Squidoo and let them know I was just like them.

I would like to say THANK YOU to all of my fellow lensmasters who have left comments and rated my lenses over the years, who have encouraged me to continue on making quality lenses. And I would like to say THANK YOU to those who operate Squidoo and keep it running, as well as fresh and exciting.

Thank You for Visiting!
