Making Greyhound Trips Fun

Ranked #15,106 in Travel & Places, #359,090 overall

Greyhound can be an inexpensive and fun way to travel

It's possible to travel across the country by bus, often much cheaper than by plane or train. Large baggage compartments make it possible to carry a large amount of gear if necessary, without additional baggage fees being as high as they can be especially with travel by air. Bus travel can be more relaxed than driving, as you just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Traveling by bus can also be a long trip if you are traveling any great distance, so be sure to think about what you need and what you can bring to make the trip more entertaining and fun. Check out the information here for some great tips from someone who has traveled all over the country this way.

Enjoy the beautiful Countryside on Your Bus Trip

Bring a Camera if You Can!

All along your ride if you are traveling at all by day, you will see a thousand beautiful things outside the windows of the bus. This is a great way to get to see many parts of the country they you may not have traveled through before. You'd be surprised what great pictures you can get out of the side of a moving bus! The best trick is to take a digital camera with a good amount of memory, and take a LOT of pictures. Some of them will come out really blurry, or you may get a glare from the windows of the bus. Some of them however are likely to come out beautifully. This can give you an opportunity to get shots from angles that you wouldn't otherwise be at, and you will probably be really glad you did.

Of course, you shouldn't shoot pictures the whole way, leaning over anyone, or in the middle of the night when half the bus is asleep. Having a good spirited nature with the other travelers will take you miles in a much more friendly style.

Bring A Good Book With You

Reading is another good way to entertain yourself while traveling

You should have a bag of travel goodies to carry on the bus, and one thing you should definitely carry is a good book. Having something to do while you are watching themiles go by can really help you to enjoy thetrip and be patient with little moments of frustration. Here are a few I'd stick in my backpack.

Travel Essentials

Make your trip more comfortable!

Some things just make a trip easier. If you're on a bus for a long time, getting into a comfortable position to relax is important. being able to get on and off quickley at break areas is also important, and you'll want to leave something not too important on your seat to mark your place....while still keeping valuables with you. Learning what and how to pack can make a trip turn out to go smoothly and be very nice. Here's a list of things I think you might want to consider bringing, and links to useful travel gear on the net. :-)

A U shaped neck pillow

A Travel Blanket

Good Reading Material

That will be me in the back of the bus singing with Jeremiah! I have been hearing people talking of seeing the country by bus more and more. Great tips!

If all else fails... you can sing: "The wheels on the bus go 'round and 'round..."

    With Love and Gratitude,

I came from NY State and went to college in Kansas. I traveled by Greyhound Bus several times during my college years and always enjoyed it. Fellow travelers can make it fun. I've also taken several trips by chartered bus and found it a great deal of fun.

Recently I wanted to travel by bus from St. Louis to Davenport, Iowa to visit relatives, but found out the route included a trip to Chicago before going to Iowa, which added 5 hours to the trip. Not sure the convenience of not having to drive myself is better than driving straight up for 5 hours! :) But I never minded bus travel.

Thanks but no thanks, I like my freedom and don't like to be closed in any place with other people, elevators are a no no too!

I traveled from Milwaukee to San Francisco and around California and back a different route by Greyhound bus MANY years ago. A (standby) pass that lasted some number of months cost only 50 bucks, so I sight-saw during the day then slept on my way to a new destination every day. But quite a few riding couldn't develop the patience or flexibility needed to enjoy this cheap mode of travel, and (even back then) there were passengers around me using a word that rhymes with trucks to describe their dismay with the bus voyage explitive-ly, heheh.
