Making Knives By Your Own Creation

As we know, a knife is a cutting tool with an exposed cutting edge or blade, hand-held or otherwise, with or without a handle.

Knives were used at least two and a half million years ago, as evidenced by the Oldowan tools.

Originally made of rock, flint, and obsidian, knives have evolved in construction as technology has, with blades being made from bronze, copper, iron, steel, ceramic, and titanium.

But, for hobbies or we can call them knife lovers, it's not enough just collecting it, but also want to make its own in accordance with our own model.

Before making knife, we have to know and choose type of material we will to use, The following are a types of materials commonly used for making a knives: Steel O1, D2, 400C, ATS-34 and Damscus stell,

Steel O1

This steel have high carbon content and low chromium, high hardness 65 HRC max. Easily corroded and require good care.

Steel D2

Is a leading steel with high carbon and chromium content, high hardness 64 HRC max. Although quite resistant but still not free of rust, this material is very popular because of its hardness higher, so that the sharp became durable and easy to sharpen.

Stainless Steel-440C

Stainless steel with high carbon content and high chromium, high hardness 60 HRC max. highly resistant to corrosion, hardness pretty good but when a blunt for a little more tough than sharpening blades of D2 steel materials.

Stainless Steel-ATS 34

This type the best at steel, high carbon, high chromium, free of rust and hardness 60-61 HRC max. highly recommended for knife makers, although that is still a bit difficult to be sharpened.

Damascus Steel

Is a type of steel through the process of forging two layers of nickel iron with a different color then folded and forged again until hundreds of folds that form in accordance with the desired pattern. this steel is good if we looking the art and the patterns formed on the steel.

    my brother has made several knives, and I've always dreamed of having a damascus steel knife! I do have one of his made from a snowmobile spring, great knife, but kinda cuts the cornors. lol, a great knife is a Blessing in many ways!
