Make Your Own Stained Glass Pattern

There are countless number of stained glass pattern books available yet there are times when you may want something unique, with your own personality, and fits into your decor. There are ways to use clip art, photos, other stained glass patterns and a little of your creativity to design a stained glass pattern that is all your own.

The stained glass hanging panel shown here is a combination of many images combined together, I added my own creativity, and designed a pattern that represents a fresh new start and freedom.

Scan Images Into Your Computer

Another way to get the image you want for your stained glass pattern is to scan it into your computer. Save all of the images into your folder you made for this pattern so everything you have found, downloaded, copied and scanned is together and ready for you to combine to design your pattern.

This floral cluster is another image I combined to design the pattern used for the hanging panel at the beginning of this lens.

Draw Your Images

Open up the images you want to combine for your pattern into a photo editing program. The image should fill up an 8"-by-11" sheet of paper. Print the image in "gray scale" by clicking "Print", click on your printer, click on "Properties", then the "Color" tab and check "Print in Grayscale". Printing in gray scale makes the edges of the images more defined and easier to trace.

Tape one image at a time onto a window that has light coming through it and tape a blank sheet of paper over it. You could also purchase a light box, as sold by Amazon below. Trace the edges of the image shapes with a pencil. Remember, as you trace the shapes, you will be cutting each shape into stained glass pieces. Depending on your skill level for cutting stained glass the pieces should be made large while keeping the overall image recognizable. You may need to add additional lines so individual pieces can be cut.

Repeat for each image you want to combine for your stained glass pattern.

Making Your Stained Glass Pattern

This is the actual pattern used for the hanging panel at the beginning of this lens.

Scan each pencil drawing onto your computer and into a photo editing program. Re-size each drawing to the appropriate size and print out the images. Cut around each image. Use a large piece of white paper or tape several sheets of printing paper together so it is larger than your finished pattern will be. Tape each image into place. With a pencil add lines ot connect each image making sure each individual piece can be cut into a stained glass piece.

Draw an outside bounding box the exact size you want your stained glass window to be. Connect each image to this box. Remember that all the lines do not have to be straight but do not make them so curved that they can not be cut into stained glass pieces.

Number each piece of your pattern. Decide which pieces are going to be what color and begin a color code." Blk" for black, "Y" for yellow, "Gr" for green," Gry" for gray, etc. Put the color code onto each piece.

On each piece put slash lines depicting which way the grain will go. This will be very important when using stained glass with streaks or textures. You will want to cut each piece of that colored stained glass in the same direction so your pattern flows.

Make three copies of your finished pattern. One will be placed on a flat surface and be used as the template, one will be cut into individual pieces and the third copy will be for stand-by in case you need to re-cut pieces or for reference.

The woman who owned our home before us was a stained glass artist. She left behind two windows and several flower panes, which I'd love to add to someday. If I ever find time, there is a stained glass shop and school just a block away. It's fun to visit and see what other artists have created.

I love stained glass and added quite a bit of it to the house that the ex now lives in. It is one of the most beautiful type of decorations for transom windows, in my opinion. I've never thought of making my own, don't think I'm talented enough in that respect.

I've been thinking of buying some stained glass stuff for the home - I'm in my remodeling and decorating mood right now and improve or replace lots of things - but I've seen two patterns which I really like in this page so, I'm going to save it on the computer so that I can get back when I'll feel more confident and will create those stained glass items myself.
