How to Make A Music Video
I'm not talking about hiring a camera crew and you and your buddies dragging your guitars out to some field and having a photo shoot. I am talking about taking a song, and putting pictures and movie clips to it and making it look nice! You can take some pics and clips and put them together to an appropriate song and make a great picture/movie slideshow! It look great and makes a great gift! If you would like to learn more about this, then keep reading! If you have done this before and have something to add, then please post in the comments below!Movie making is an art... and a science... all in one. If you think creatively and put stuff together, you can come up with something beautiful!
For me, making movies is a lot of fun, but also a lot of work! If you really enjoy doing it, you will find yourself spending hours and hours on it, without even realizing that you are working! Making a music video is no exception. Finding the right song, pictures, theme, transitions, etc.... it takes a while. However, the finished product can be so worth it! So if you aren't afraid to spend a little time and do a little work, keep reading how to make a music video!
1. First You Have To Decide Upon Your Video Editing Software
If you have a WIndows PC, then you should have software called Windows Movie Maker. This is what you can use to edit your videos. If you have a Mac, then you should have iMovie software. (iMovie is my personal preference!). If you do not have either of these, then you can look online for some free editors (however, this lens will not explain how to use any of those). If you do not have Windows Movie Maker, then download the 2.1 version Here.
Since I never had good experiences with Windows Movie Maker, I will be writing this in favor of iMovie. However, Windows Movie Maker does the job as well. It's personal preference, and (obviously) it is determined by what you have avaliable.
Do you have a Mac or PC?
Books can be helpful resources to keep around!
2. Picking A Song
Picking the song first is a great idea. Perhaps you already know what song you want right off the bat, and that is why you are making the music video. Or maybe you have a group of pics and you want to find a song to go along with it. If you have to decide on a song for your pictures, then you must first look at what mood you are trying to set. Maybe you have a bunch of pictures from a youth activity to a theme park! You'd probably want a fun song to go along with that. Or maybe you have some pictures of you and your girlfriend. You'd probably want something slow and sweet to go along with that. It all depends on the message you are trying to get across. Need a Song? Buy the Perfect Song!
3. Picking Out Your Pics
(If you haven't already)
Maybe you just heard a song, and decided that you wanted to make a movie about it. Then that works too! Just look through your library for related pics and videos. Maybe you have something that would go GREAT with the song. Maybe you just have stuff that is semi-related. Maybe you could do a metaphor. The song could be about one thing, and with your pictures and videos, you could compare it to something else. The job of the pictures and videos is to make the song visual. If you haven't done that, then you won't get the message across.Once you have your song picked out, then looking for related stuff will be the hard part. You might have to dig around, or you might even have to find new stuff. Keep looking. If you need help, look for images online. Make sure you have enough videos clips and pics to last through the desired amount of time that you want your movie to be.
4. Putting It All Together
This is one of the hard parts. You now have to organize everything together and make it look nice. Find a good order to arrange the pics and clips in. Make sure the song starts at the right place. Add transitions, make effects! This is the par where you get to be creative! Let it run wild. But... don't go too crazy. Generally, the type of message you are trying to get across will determine how wild you want it to be. If you are trying to do a sentimental music video, then you probably won't want a bunch of clips and pictures zooming in and out of the screen, making all kinds of crazy effects. On the other hand, if you are going for something loud and crazy, then go totally all out with the effects and transitions! Make a pictures in the "negative" color form. Make it spin around, upside down, and all over the place! 5. Adding Credits, Title, Etc
You gotta put in credits. Even if you just put in your name (as the producer) and the name of the song. Credits make movies look so much more professional. Not all music videos have a title, but I think it helps. Personal preference! If you need to put text on any of the clips or pics, now is the time to do that. Make sure you have your timing right so everything comes in and goes off at just the right time. 6. Editing
This is sometimes the dreaded processes. This is where the creativity tends to go down, and the hard work seems to go up. It's not so much about trying to figure out where stuff goes and what looks best now; it's about fixing all the little kinks. I.e.- your pic goes off the screen at the wrong time. Your music skips. You misspelled something in your credits or on your title. You accidentally put another picture in. Whatever it is, you have to find it! There's always some kind of error that you need to fix over. Also, during this editing time, you may come up with a better idea! (You don't completely lose creativity while editing!) Look for ideas that could make your movie better. If you come up with some, great! Try them out and see if they work! If you don't, then don't worry about it. Save the project and see if you can come up with something else later.
7. Publishing
Once you have created your movie, you might need to pubilsh it. This process will vary depending on your video editing software. In iMovie, this is done by double clicking the project in the project library. Select "iTunes" or "Share to Media Browser". Then, simply wait for it to do the rest. Once your project is published, you can share it! Put it up on youtube. Post it on Facebook. Whatever and wherever you think would be appropriate! Other Lenses That Can Help!
