Family Night Means Pizza

Making pizzas at home

Saturday night at home I plan on making some sort of Italian dish most weeks. Generally, this means spaghetti bolognaise as that is what my picky eaters like best. Sometimes though, just for fun, we make our own pizzas.

Since we each have our own idea of what makes the perfect pizza, we each get to make our own. Mommy and Daddy put the sauce on the pizza bases for little boys and they do the rest.

It's a great way to have fun in the kitchen and encourage little ones to cook.

Making pizzas

I have to admit, we generally take lots of shortcuts on pizza night. I can get already cooked pizza bases at the grocery store. All they need are the toppings.

We set out a selection of pizza toppings.

A variety of sliced meats - pepperoni, sausage, salami.
A variety of vegetables - sliced red onion, peppers, mushrooms, olives, sweetcorn.
A variety of cheeses - mozzarella, parmigiano, goat's cheese (for me)
Extra bits - anchovies, capers, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, salt and pepper

And then, we create!

The boys each have their own style.

Thing 1 gets creative and makes patterns and designs with his pizza.

Thing 2 just dumps it all on. He tends to put it all in one big lump at one side, so needs a bit more help yet.

Paul likes a bit of everything, including the anchovies and the capers. Then tops it off with a thick layer of mozzarella cheese.

I like a lot of veggies, and not much meat these days. I especially like putting soft goat's cheese, red onions, and balsamic vinegar on mine.

Pizza, at my house

It may be seen as a crime, but I don't get fancy with the pizza sauce. I use tomato paste (tomato puree double concentrate). Spoon a bit of that on each pizza snd you're good to go.

Add whatever toppings you like. Don't forget the cheese.

A good grating of parmigiano on top followed by a spray of olive oil, a pinch of salt, and a good grinding of black pepper.

Then into the oven for about 15 minutes.
