Ranked #89,093 in Home & Garden, #1,807,741 overall
Are you living with your grandparents or old parents? If you are, safety should be your top-most priority for them. One of the best places to begin with is the bedroom. As you can see, most elderly tend to spend lots of their time in their bedrooms. This is because their movement tends to lessen. And, usually, accidents happen inside it. Below are some tips which you may follow:
Choose the right location of the bedroom.
If you have a two-storey house you should have a room for them at the main floor. In this way, the elderly will no longer need to climb up stairs. They will have an easy access to their way in and out. As much as possible, their bedroom has a bathroom inside it or at least their room should be near to the bathroom.
Choosing the right bed.
The bed plays an important role for the elderly, especially if they become bedridden. The bed must be safe for them to use. Choose a mattress that will provide enough support to their whole body and comfort. You may also choose or install safety handles or side rails for them. These will prevent them from falling. And, if they want to go up or down from the bed, they can hold on to the side rails.
The bed height must not be too high. It should sit close to the ground. If they feel dizzy, they can just sit at the edge of the bed without hanging their feet since they can already reach the floor.
Providing communication.
Oftentimes, it will be hard to take twenty four hours in a day and seven days in a week to look after the elderly. There will be moments when you need to leave them alone in their bedroom. That's why their room must have bedroom phone so that when they need something, you can easily attend to their needs. But make sure that the phone is accessible by them. You can also check them from time to time.
Changing the floor.
Tiles or any other type of floors can be dangerous for the elderly. They are at risk of getting slipped that may lead to more serious injuries. The floors should not be slippery. A carpeted floor can be a great idea. And, carpeted floor can prevent the elderly from absorbing the coldness that happens when tiles are being used.
Arranging the closet.
Do not put too much heavy things inside the closet. The tendency is, once the elderly open the closet, all of those heavy stuffs may fall to them. You can arrange the things inside the closet regularly. This will also aid them in finding their things independently and easily.
Remove the clutter.
Keep the whole bedroom clean and well-organized. In fact, you may no longer need to put on too many decorations like figurines. They may accidentally break the figurines which can lead them to have wounds. Keep the floors from any object as they may step on them. Adding storage system can help in keeping the room cluttered-free.
