Blog: Making A Mark
This is Making A Mark - the blog!
"Making A Mark" started off as the name of my first blog. As a 'name' it has a number of meanings and reflects a number of the topic areas I write about - including: artists, art exhibitions, art blogs; art history; art techniques and tips; art business and marketing; art economy and making a mark with pastels, coloured pencils and pen and ink.
Making A Mark has proved to be very popular:
* It has over 3,000 subscribers
* it has had over ONE MILLION visitors since January 2006.
* It's been rated the #3 art blog in the UK for the last two years and has been in the top 25 since 2009
* It is consistently ranked within the top 20 art blogs in the world - beating a number of commercial/newspaper art blogs and blogs authored by groups.
I write a blog post most days and below you can see the titles of the last five

All my websites place a great deal of emphasis on how to sketch, sketching and sketchbooks. Not surprising therefore to find that the title of my second blog is Travels with a Sketchbook. It's about what I see, do and sketch in my travels with a sketchbook - all over the world.
Below you can find links to galleries on my website and links to resource sites - and a new group blog created in the summer of 2011 - called Four Go Painting in Provence
I've also created a popular ning community called Sketchercise for those who are trying to exercise as well as sketch . The community is private but you can read our group blog A Postcard from my Walk

Landscape Art
I love drawing views and vistas - the bigger the better!
A few years ago - when I started to put together the galleries on my very first art website I began to realise that I really like drawing landscapes - and not just any old landscapes - I'm particularly drawn to views and vistas (excuse the pun!)
I've learned about 'how to' construct a landscape over the years but actually knew relatively little about landscape painting as a genre of art so decided that my major project for 2010 should be about landscape art. So I did some research first and then on 1st January 2010 I started a new blog - The Art of the Landscape
This is what the project covers:
* art history: the development of landscape art - across time and in different countries and cultures;
* art movements: a timeline of different approaches to developing landscape art - in the studio and plein air; from observation and imagination
* art instruction: different approaches to teaching and learning about landscape art
* artists: learning more about famous landscape artists (past and present); and
* drawing and painting: insights into developing your own landscape art; tips and techniques
Unsurprisingly I'm also developing lenses associated with this new project!
The Art of the Landscape
learning more about the development of landscape drawing, painting and photography - by exploring, sharing and doing
I started this new blog on 1st January 2010 for my major new project - learning about the landscape. It now has over 350 subscribers and has had c.65,000 visitors since it started

Art projects have been a regular feature of my blog since January 2007. In 2008 I focused on a couple of art basics - composition and colour - and developed these lenses as a result
Learning about.... Working In A Series
I'm interested in artists - like Monet - who work in series
Sharing and Learning are Important

I absoloutely LOVE Art Books!
art instruction books, art history books and art reference books
...and art bookshops!
Basically I need a new home to house my ever-growing library of art books. Failing that more book shelves are urgently needed!
I buy lots of art books and am also sent books to review. I share my book reviews on Making A Mark reviews
You can find more books about drawing and sketching, colour, composition, botanical art and landscape art elsewhere on this site!
All about my Art Materials

I've learned about art materials in the past from many different artists whose recommendations I valued.
This is a link to the page on my website where you can see pictures of all the art materials and equipment I use.

These "Resources for Artists" sites now provide a home for all the information on the internet which I've collected about the art materials, media and equipment that I use.
Plus information about you can buy art supplies from recommended art shops - in the high street and online
All about the Art Business
I'm particularly interested in creating a resource for those who want to take the next step and get involved in selling their art - but know nothing or very little about the art business.
How to...create your artist statement and resume
or critique art
First things first - how to write about yourself and your art! Then you get to comment on the artwork of others - and sign a painting
The Art Business
For people who want to do more than just create.
If you want to communicate with other artists exhibit your art and/or sell your artworks then these lenses are likely to provide some pointers.
Pricing Art
Before you become a collectable artist you need to work out how to price your art.
Marketing Art
Selling Art Online
Much art is now sold online - and these sites can help artists generate sales.
You'll find I've been using my analytical skills to find and analyse data which tells us something about which sites work best
Questions about art and artists
The Making A Mark Opinion Poll: I've run very many surveys and polls of different audiences for different clients in my time. The MAM Poll is all about topics of interest to artists and asked of and answered by artists reading my blog. Plus my analysis of the results!
What stimulates my art
- the impact of light on colour and form
- the repetition and variation in shapes and patterns I see around me
- the abstraction of patterns and shapes seen in nature
I love Flowers and Plants
a sample of the artwork on my website
I love flowers and plants - I love looking at them, photographing them, studying them and drawing them.
I also regularly exhibit with the Society of Botanical Artists
Below are my gallery pages from my portfolio website and my print gallery. These reflect the the different ways that I draw flowers in both colour and a monochromatic way.

Drawing people and information about portraiture
I'm interested in drawing people and artists who paint people and portraits.
Drawing people is an invaluable way of developing a wide range of artistic skills. I've been drawing people for many years - family, friends, people in cafes and restaurants, life class models - and other artists. The latter make wonderful models for learning how to draw people who are animated as most tend to have a neat and repetitive routine of movements when drawing or painting.

I've decided the time has come to write a bit more about sketching people. So this blog post is about 10 tips on how to sketch people - or at least my understanding of how I sketch people. This post is also a condensed version of an article I'm drafting

Other art interests
Making time for art
How to take a break
With a very busy career taking painting holidays used to be one of the few ways I could make enough time to devote to art. Artists also need a break from time to time.
Here are some options for people who need to make time for their creativity.
Learn from the Masters
Learning more about the History of Art
I've never been taught much about art history - and I've now embarked upon one of the most interesting journeys I've ever been on!
I've currently developing a new series of resource sites about art museums and galleries
Art Museums in France
Artists I've studied - as a project on Making A Mark
Resources for Art Lovers
Starting in 2007, I've spent time on intensive study of specific artists. I built these sites with the links I found during my research but the sites are active and new links continue to be added.
Most of the sites provide links to: sites about the life of the artist; major themes in the artists' work; museums, art galleries and exhibitions where you can see the artist's paintings in person or images of them online, books and articles about the artist and his/her work and exhibition catalogues and links to videos about his/her work.
Japanese artists I've studied
Making A Mark had a Japanese Art project in early 2008
Japanese artists of the Edo period influenced a lot of the nineteenth century artists I'm interested in - so it was a natural step to find out why they were so influential.
I also did a project on Japanese Art in 2008 on my blog.
Artists in History who interest me
These are information sites about other artists I'm interested in. I'm planning future projects about some of them.
Most of the sites provide links to: sites about the life of the artist; major themes in the artists' work; museums, art galleries and exhibitions where you can see the artwork; books and articles about the artist and his/her work and exhibition catalogues; videos about his/her work
British Artists from the past who interest me
Contemporary British Artists who interest me
I work in coloured pencils - and I love the way David Hockney uses coloured pencils - plus he's a big believer in the importance of drawing every day and carrying a sketchbook!
More American artists who interest me
You can find my Andrew Wyeth lens in the Squidoo lens of the Day link near the top of this site
UK sculptors I like
I'm finding I like sculpture more and more - mainly when I see it outside.
The Art Community - around and about and on display
Art Societies, Art Exhibitions and Art Competitions
I very much enjoy visiting the exhibitions of the major art societies and art competitions and regularly write reviews of these for my blog.
Art Forums and Groups - Resources for Artists
I've participated in different forums in the past but now prefer blogging and smaller special interest communities.
My Art Groups - for my sites only
These are all the art groups that I originally set up on Squidoo which are devoted to just my lenses only
They provide a different way of bookmarking if people are only interested in some sites and not others.
Resources for Artists - open to lenses created by others
Resources for Art Lovers - including lenses created by others
Note the criteria for including a lens
These are all the art groups that I run on Squidoo which are open to the inclusion of information sites made by other people
They provide a different way of bookmarking if people are only interested in some sites and not others.

- It can certainly be confusing to start with - but so is learning any new language for communication. The impact on your art depends on your purpose. A lot of artists comment online that social networking is a much more efficient way of staying in touch with other artists AND marketing their artwork!

- What does it all mean? Squidoo? Twitter? Facebook, Even the on-line dictionary doesn't recognise most of them. So who thinks up all these strange titles? Further though, if I join, will I be 'twiting', 'squidding' or 'facing' all the time, instead of painting? That's what I would love to know.

- BH - Thanks for the comment. I went and checked my reference to Talens Van Gogh in Coloured Pencils - Resources for Artists and see I referred to my local supplier without identifying who that was or providing a link to their website. Big mistake!!! This is now corrected - I've provided a link to both website and the drawing catalogue which quotes prices in my review of the Talens Van Gogh pencils. As stated in that review you can find shops which stock Talens on their website (also listed) - but I'd ring the listed number and check before paying a visit to make sure that a shop stocks their coloured pencils as well as Talens paint
As stated in my review Royal Talens Van Gogh Coloured Pencils
