How to Make Money if You're A Teenager

Ranked #270 in Business & Work, #16,274 overall

The Guide For People Below Eighteen

Everybody wants to make money, it's a fact. So here's a few ways of making quite a bit of cash WITHOUT HAVING TO PUT FORWARD ANY MONEY. For teenagers especially, making money whilst trying to fit in family, school work and friends can be almost impossible, but there are ways..

This lense describes some ideas to so that you can get the money you want.

Sell Your Old Stuff

You forget when you're trying to make money that all that junk in your room is actually worth something. There's loads of ways to get rid of it and get cash in return:

1) Sell it to your friends. They're the people I always turn to first. You know what they like and they definitely won't con you. Friends are good to sell video games and DVD's to.

2) Have a car boot sale. It's usually around £5 to pitch a car at these events. Simply load up all your old stuff into your parents car and ask them if its alright. You won't get great prices, but you sell some truly awful stuff.

3) Always try second-hand shops, they can give you some very good deals. Some major high-street names such as Blockbusters offer this service.

4) Advertise items in the paper. There's usually a form so that you can advertise one item at a time for free. Local papers are read by a lot of people and you'll usually get at least one person phone. I only recommend this for single items though.

5) Create an account on Ebay. You may have to get your parents help if your under 18, but this is a great money making opportunity. You can sell anything on Ebay and as its an auction sometimes you can get a very good price. If you get really good try finding bargains and then sell them on for a profit.

Pooper Scooper Business

Somebody's got to do it

Fairly simple, and great if you you don't mind turd. Just offer to make two visits a week to a persons house to clean up the poo in the garden if they've got pets.

I recomend your rates as £3-£5 a week. And although this doesn't sound like much, if you get ten customers you'll be making more than what a 9-5 saturday job does. It doesn't even take that long: a typical visit will take five-ten minutes, and you can even choose the days that you're not busy on.

All you have to do is make an eye-catching poster and put it up in places around your area and deliver some flyers.

You could even branch out into dog walking at £5-£10 a time.

Saturday Job

Obviously

A great way to get a steady income, but a part-time job cam be hard to come across. Firstly, I would check if any relatives you know own any shops that you could help out in.

Secondly, check the local paper. There's always loads of jobs advertise in the back pages. Don't be afraid to give people a ring, and put your name down for as many things as possible, even if there's a long list.

Thirdly, go out and actually check around. You'll find that most places don't advertise if they've got a position available. Be confident and ask at the counter if they've got anything for you. I find the best places are chip shops if your looking for something to start off with, because you'll have flexible hours and you won't need experience.

Where I come from, the standard rate for a student id £5 an hour, though I know it is alot lower in other places. Ask your friends what they get paid, and maybe they can give you some tips.

Take Photos

Lots of them

This is an easy one, though a little unreliable. All you need is a decent digital camera. If you don't have one, see if you can borrow one from a relative.

There are loads of websites (see the link list at the bottom of the page) where you can sell photographs. Usually around 50p every time one is downloaded, stretching into hundreds of pounds if somebody buys the license. The trick is to snap and upload as many as you can, even if they're not that good.

Another way of making money with a camera is for the paper, and although I hate to say it the easiest way is to take pictures of accidents.

A paper will pay around £50 for a good photo, and the only way you'll get them to buy one is if it's of something that was completely unexpected, because otherwise they will just send one of their professional photographers out. It sounds strange, but carry a camera every where you go, and ask your friends if they can call you on your phone if anything big happens.

It's not a great source of income, but for little work you can get some good cash on the side.

Write!

If you're good at writing, there's a few ways you can make cash with your work, without having to write a huge novel (though you can do this if you want)

Firstly, write short stories and enter them into competitions with cash prizes. It only takes an hour or two, and once you've written one enter into as many competitions as you can. If you're good it's only a matter of time before you're hauling in the money.

Secondly, if you're REALLY good, try sending your poems or short story's to publishing companies and see what comes up. If you don't get a respons from them, try magazines and internet sites, anything that pays for a decent piece of writing.

Finally, try writing articles. Not only does it not take long if you're writing something you know about, but you can even use old school work! Try sending to magazines, or even sell them on Helium.com. An article can sell from about £60 to £300 if its really good, and once you're published simply slightly tweak the original article and try and sell it again!

Sell Personalized Children's Books

The perfect birthday gift

For this you will need somewhere you can print and a computer. (It would also be handy if you had a digital camera) Simply write personalized children's stories, by letting people fill in a questionaire and send it to you.

Firstly, make a decent, eye-catching poster and hang it up around your area. Then, make a questionaire which asks such details as 'Child's name', 'Favourite Hobbies', 'Best Friends' and 'Favourite Places.'

All you have to do is make a batch of stamped envelopes addressed to your house, and tie each with an elastic band together with your advertisement and the questionaire. Leave these bundles at such places as community centres and nurserys (though always ask the person in charge first).

Charge around the £10 mark, and once the letters start coming in make a decent job of the books so that people might use your service again, or at least tell their friends. Its a good idea to make sure that the customer knows the story is unique, do this buy weaving it around the person's local area and include stuff that is personal to the child.

Finish off by printing it on professional paper. It's low risk, and if you get good at it, it could make you around £150 a month.

Make Money on Squidoo

Let the Cash Role in As You Sleep!

Use this very website to make cash. If you're not familiar with the concept, money is made when a customer clicks through one of your advertisements to buy a product (such as the digital cameras I've shamelessly stuck on below).

Some people and make very good, detailed articles, though if your trying to make money I recomend making a lense every evening or so. Try and cash in on the latest craze: If a DVD comes out, make a page about it with a link to it on Amazon. Try making a page on the latest clothes and plug the page with hundreds of links to clothes on the internet.

It can be pretty obvious sometimes, but just keep trying. Like most things you'll get better with time.

Remember that your lenses will never go away, so a lense built now about say 'James Bond' may make you a lot of cash years in the future when the latest movie comes out.

If you get good you can make a few hundred a year on this just in your spare time!
