Did you know that over 1 million plastic bags are consumed per minute globally?
According to the Worldwatch Institute, an environmental research group, "about 500 billion plastic bags are discarded around the world annually. It is estimated a traditional plastic bag will break down and dissolve over the course of 1,000 years".
What a eye opener to read facts as these. That's why I decided to look around the subject of making my own reusable shopping bags. Right now, I am using the bags given for free from different companies with their advertising on it, but I also started to make my own reusable bags.

Reusable Bags for Shopping Lead to Solar Power
Here is an excerpt of the article "Remember our blog back in 2009 about Colorado ski towns Telluride and Aspen? The residents battled to see who would hold bragging rights over using the most reusable bags for shopping-and earn new solar panels for its high school. That original competition resulted in the 2009 Colorado Association of Ski Towns (CAST) Reusable Bag Challenge.
Why are we writing about this two years later? The town that won the Reusable Bag Challenge just debuted a new $50,000 solar power system at its middle school-a system that was created because of the town's victory back in 2009."

Bring Joy To A Child With A Special Pillowcase
"ConKerr Cancer: A Case for Smiles" was started when Ryan Kerr was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer at the age of twelve. Despite his illness - and many, many trips to the hospital - Ryan lived a full life of school, sports and friends. To make his hospital room cheerier, his mom Cindy began making fun, whimsical pillowcases to brighten up his day and put a smile on his face. Ryan liked them so much that Cindy started making pillowcases for the other children in the Oncology Unit. In a short time, the pillowcase project grew in amazing ways and has provided more than 175,000 pillowcases to sick children. Thousands of volunteers from across North America and South Africa have joined in so that ConKerr has more than 100 chapters serving over 150 hospitals.
ConKerr Cancer volunteers also visit oncology units and outpatient clinics in order to guide young patients as they learn to sew pillowcases for themselves, their family and their friends. Volunteers bring all that is required for the children to design and create the perfect masterpiece. Girls and boys, mothers, fathers and siblings, all join in for this fun distraction during one of the most stressful experiences of life. But the benefits go far beyond distraction. The activity boosts the children's self esteem, confidence and sense of mastery. They are so proud of themselves when they see what they've made that they flash giant smiles of satisfaction!
ConKerr Cancer has been able to make wonderful progress towards fulfilling our goal of making hospital stays as pleasant as possible for chronically ill children and their parents. Simultaneously the pillowcase project has fostered a spirit of community and volunteer service in communities across North America. Unfortunately the number of sick children never ends, and we must continue to expand our efforts to help brighten sick children's lives and raise awareness about childhood cancer.
We hope you will join us - we guarantee it will put a smile on your face too!

- Very very common in Australia. Most of us have multiple bags in our car 'boot'. Some stores have even started charging for bags if you require them. It doesn't seem to bother anyone. We all have our own! I carry 3 folding bags in my handbag at all times. I've been meaning to make some for a while now... you give me extra inspiration!

- Great Lens, loved the Halloween Bags (I collect Halloween Rubberstamps). I usually use the bags I bought from Trader Joe's; and when I do get plastic bags I reuse them as garbage bags. I've seen people that make pocket books and coil rugs out of them too and sell them at craft shows (great idea).

- I use less than half the bags I'm offered. Last year at a before Christmas sale, I got a reusable shopping basket that will hold about 7 days of groceries for me. I use it everywhere from the grocery store to Target to the library. Plus if you don't use a bag, most stores will give you a 5 cent refund on all bags you would have used. It adds up.

- Sometimes old fashioned solutions are best. What happened to baskets or bags made of straws? I think most of us are too comfortable to take bags (plastic or non plastic) on shoppings, so we need new ones in shops. Simple planning makes big difference!
