Captain Malcolm Reynolds was the gun-slinging, cynical, protective, wise-cracking, thieving, war-hero captain of the ship Serenity, from the well known and well love space cowboy series, Firefly. Firefly was directed by Joss Whedon and unmercifully cut short in it;s prime by Fox, leading to it being immortalised forever in fans' hearts. He was played by Nathon Fillion in both the series and the recent film, Serenity.

Mal was a sergeant in the 57th Overlanders Brigade, on the side of the Independents at the Battle of Serenity Valley, where the war ended. Afterwards, he found himself a derelict 03-K64 Firefly-class transport sitting in a shipyard, and named it Serenity.
Serenity came to represent his freedom, his last stand, and his independence. Mal fiercely defended his crew, and went to great lengths to keep her flying.

Mal was one of the Browncoats, who fought for the Independents in the big old war between the independent planets and the Alliance. The Independents lost, and now the whole galaxy celebrates Unification Day... well. Almost the whole galaxy. Mal still manages to always find himself in an Alliance-friendly bar, come Unification Day.

Mal: [smiles] Nothing. I just wanted you to face me so she could get behind you.

What do you need to dress up as Mal?

Mal's costume is based on classic cowboy-wear. If you have the money (a LOT of money) there are sites out there that specialise in TV and Film replicas - Mal's coats and pistol, for example. If you don't have several hundred dollars, you can easily put together his outfit yourself (or a very close version of it).

Suspenders and trousers - pretty straight forward, just buy similar styles (for example the ones from Amazon below, or browse through the links afterward). The trousers have a stripe down the side, which you'll have to add yourself with ribbon.

Boots - riding boots look fine, or pirate-style boots, with the flap cut off. His boots are actually low-cut shoes with glued on spats. There's a link to a store on eBay below that does pretty good matches.

Shirt - eight or nine different ones, but always collared, buttoned, long sleeved shirt in a single colour. The red shirt is probably the most dramatic and best suited, colour-wise, and the one that's used the most in promotional art and screenshots, so is also the best known, but any plain, long-sleeved, collared, earth-coloured shirt would do. And I lied; the clay-brown shirt he wears fighting the Operative at the end of Serenity (the film) is actually subtly striped (or checked in large rectangles - hard to see!)

Duster (coat) - the replica versions of Mal's 'brown coat' are very expensive, but you can buy them. otherwise just a generic cowboy duster.

Belt, holster and gun - the belt is just a belt, the holster is a bit tricky but easily winged, the pistol is the hardest part. You can use another gun, but the only realistic versions are the (quite expensive) replicas listed above.
