Malcolm X | Malcolm Little

Malcolm X was a militant leader of the Nation of Islam, a Black Muslim organization, in the 1950s and early 1960s. In contrast to other black religious leaders of that time who espoused pacifism, he called for achieving equality "by any means necessary." Malcolm X created a secular black nationalist group known as the Organization of Afro-American Unity. Despite threats on his life, he continued to preach this "new religion" until his assassination in 1965.

Malcolm X, A Quick Biography

Malcolm X and Dr Martin Luther King Jr 1964Malcolm X (born Malcolm Little; May 19, 1925 - February 21, 1965), also known as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, was an African American Muslim minister, public speaker, and human rights activist. To his admirers, he was a courageous advocate for the rights of African Americans, a man who indicted white America in the harshest terms for its crimes against black Americans. His detractors accused him of preaching racism and violence. He has been described as one of the most influential African Americans of the 20th century.

Malcolm X was born in Omaha, Nebraska. By the time he was 13, his father had died and his mother had been committed to a mental hospital. After living in a series of foster homes, Malcolm X became involved in the criminal underworld in Boston and New York. In 1945, Malcolm X was sentenced to eight to ten years in prison.

While in prison, Malcolm X became a member of the Nation of Islam. After his parole in 1952, he became one of the Nation's leaders and chief spokesmen. For nearly a dozen years, he was the public face of the Nation of Islam. Tension between Malcolm X and Elijah Muhammad, head of the Nation of Islam, led to his departure from the organization in March 1964.

After leaving the Nation of Islam, Malcolm X made the pilgrimage, the Hajj, to Mecca and became a Sunni Muslim. He traveled extensively throughout Africa and the Middle East. He founded Muslim Mosque, Inc., a religious organization, and the secular, black nationalist Organization of Afro-American Unity. Less than a year after he left the Nation of Islam, Malcolm X was assassinated while giving a speech in New York. [read the rest of the Wikipedia article]

You really should add something about Malcolm's change of heart in later life. You do him an injustice, by not doing so and anyone who has read up on him or even seen Spike Lee's movie X, knows that Malcolm did advocate more peaceful methods towards the end of his life.

I like this lens but I also have the question about the continued calling of "Malcolm Little" instead of Malcolm X. I don't think Malcolm would appreciate it. Otherwise it is a great lens.

how come you keep referring to Malcolm X as Malcolm Little? He said himself that he doesn't acknowledge that name. It's like if you were to constantly refer to Muhammad Ali as Cassius Clay- they both changed their names for a reason.

When I was researching Islam for an essay back in college, I ran into Malcolm X for the first time. His story is very interesting for many reasons. It's unfortunate that it took that long for me to hear about him.
