Imagine yourself in a paradise island with your own butler serving you beautifully presented dishes in the quiet and peace of your own villa. Just perfect after a swim in your own private pool. This is Maldives.
As you dally with this amazing repast, you can watch a rainbow of fish in water so clear only the surface diamonds hint at its presence. Your eyes, your spirit and your other senses are all fed and the inner human gives a sigh.
Yes, this is an island destination where spoiling is at its ultimate. The staff to guest ratio in many of these Maldivian resorts is 4:1. So, expect to be spoiled and pampered and served.
After a few days there, you really feel rested. Work seems to be so far away and fun is right there. If I have to choose a sun destination, Maldives would be at the top of my list. The weather is reliable and there are no hassles in the airport. Your resort will pick you up right there at the airport in their own boats with staff making sure you are comfortable. You don't even wait. Just don't bring booze as Maldives is an Islamic country. But you can get all of that in the resort. If you bring some, not to worry, they will keep it for you and give it back when you leave. So, just enjoy your holiday.
Don't bring much. You can just be in your swimsuit most of the time especially if you decide to eat all your meals in your own villa. In some resorts, guests are asked to just go barefoot. So, for once in your lifetime, just bring your cards. There is not much to buy there. If you want to go shopping, you can always go through Sri Lanka, Dubai or Bangkok and shop your heart out.

If you stay on the resort island, there are no children begging for food, beggars angling for your tourist dollars and beach hawkers flogging gee-gaws as local culture. In fact, on the resort islands there are no locals at all other than a few resort staff. The locals live in some of the most beautiful islands, they live in a resort all year. So if you want a great inter-cultural experience look elsewhere, or chat to the fish. But before you do, think about it carefully.
This is heavenly isolation and privacy which our busy lifestyle can recover much our spirit when we stay a week or so here. There are other guests, of course, but you need never see them. You can just luxuriate in your own private pool and let your butler bring you whatever you wish for. You can arrange a private dinner in the beach and with the resort's in-house reef, you can just swim there and spend your time with the fish and the other living organisms just having a great life in the reef.

While here, just enjoy the beach, the sun and the ocean. The water is warm so swimming is very pleasant. Because each resort is alone on its own island, you only share the beach with your fellow guests...not always a pretty sight, but always a great picture! You can enjoy just wasting time sun bathing or kicking up your Kindle. Read Robinson Crusoe (it's free on Amazon-Kindle) and pretend you just came home.
As you can see in the picture, you can talk to the stingray. In one resort, there is a marine life specilaist and she is there for the guests to talk in the evening when the stingrays come for their feed.

Choosing your resort in Maldives
Or, hotels in Male
All the resorts in Maldives are tops. Even those at the bottom, can still be 5 star in other countries. Mind you, they are not cheap either. I love the resorts that have unique features such as under water restaurant, manta feeding in the evening, in-house reef, world class dive center, and isolated villas with all the amenities of a butler, a boat, a pool and a golf cart to tour the island. Once in a while, we need to be pampered. This is the place to do it.
But for those who choose to do it cheaply, book your hotel in Male. And from there, call up some of the resorts for vacant rooms at discounted prices. You are taking a big risk, though during the peak season. Most of these resorts are full most of the time. These Male hotels also get booked up fast. So, don't just show up. Of all the cities in the world, Male has the most population per sq.m. Make sure you have your booking. They are bargains though compared to those resorts. You have Mookai Hotel, Relax Inn as well as some smaller guest houses in the nearby island of Hulumale. They are very comfortable. Especially when all you want to do is dive, just stay in Male in one of these hotels and go to Ocean Dive desk just across the ferry terminal from the airport. Adam, the owner there is the best diver in Maldives. Nothing is hard to find in Male. So, try this. Another adventure to brag about.

Go snorkeling
The variety of fish, coral and other shelled bits and pieces is beyond compare
Go snorkeling. Most of the resorts have their own in-house reefs. This is fantastic as you can just swim out from your own villa, float on the surface and start snorkeling to your heart's content. Some resorts will bring you to some of the best snorkeling places in the world close by.
The variety of fish, coral and other shelled bits and pieces is beyond compare and the water is so clear you almost think you can breath it. As most Maldivians only eat tuna, the reef fish don't feel challenged by humans and they will often surround you in a riot of colours. The turtles are protected so survive by the hundreds. Even sharks. You will see small sharks often in some of the beaches, hundreds of them. You do NOT qualify as a dinner so they have zero interest. The 2 meter thumpers are usually so full of the easily munchable reef fish that something of your proportions has no interest. A full shark is a swimmer's dream and these guys are always full.
Once a friend of ours got fascinated by a grouper and he just spent his time following around. Fearing improper advances, the grouper quite properly gave him a bump with his nose!. There are mantas, too, and in Huvafen Fushi, you can feed them every evening. The resort has a resident biologist who will be happy to expand your knowledge of ocean life.

Go Diving in Maldives
Warm, crystal clear waters and rich marine life
Get your PADI ticket. . Most resorts have qualified divers who can train and certify you. The water is beautifully warm even at 30 meters and the caves and coral faces are spectacular. Napoleans and other big thumpers move with great dignity and watch you with a fascination that leaves you wondering who's the fish!If you are a truly committed diver and already have your certification, you can take a safari. Book a boat on the internet and they'll pick you up at the airport. You'll meander from one site to the next, 2 dives a day, fabulous scenery under and above the water and usually a chef with some real talent. You can also book this as part of your holiday package. Four Seasons, for example, has its own safari boat.

Most resorts have several restaurants to give the guests choices and generally the food runs from good to absolutely outstanding. At least, in the 7 places we stayed at.
Talking about culinary experience, Hilton has an under water restaurant where you peer at the reef life and they peer back!. Other resorts have under water wine cellars. Some resorts can take you to an even more private island where you can have dinner for just the two of you. Think of the honeymoon memories with that kind of adventure!
Visit the Capital: Male
Go and visit the market
Many of the Resorts closer to the airport will also let you sign up to visit Male, Maldives' capital. It is the most densely populated city in the world as it is really small for over 100,000 people who all moved to Male after the tsunami to feel more safe. While there, you can visit the Sultan's Palace, the fish market where you can buy a whole tuna for the price of a small piece at home. They can clean it up for you and cut these up in steaks. Pick up wasabi and soy sauce in the grocery store and you can enjoy your sashimi back in the resort without emptying your pocket.
When you're in Maldives, try to visit an Island
Know the Maldivians and sample some of their food
You can also visit a populated island. Some resorts arrange a visit to one of the islands designated for tourists to visit. You can peek at how people live and many of these islands still live the way their forefathers lived hundreds of years ago. Except for televisions and cell phones. Sometimes, some of the islands will prepare entertainment and food for you. So, this is your chance to sample Maldivian food. You can see them dry fish, or build boats.
When visiting Male, you can go to the ferry terminals there, one is for Hulumale and the other one is for Vilingili, two islands close by that you can visit as well. Take note of the ferry schedule so you don't miss your ferry back to the resort.

The Dhoni, Traditionally Maldives
The days of iron men and wooden ships!
Talking about boats, check out a dhoni the traditional Maldivian primary transport. Some resorts have dhonis they have transformed as guest quarters so you live on these. This is quite an experience. And there is a fleet of these ubiquitous wave bouncers plying between Male and the airport. 10 minutesbut a great trip. Most of these have diesels now but in the past, they had used only sails. Traditionally built with coconut timbers, the dhonis are now made from imported wood and much sounder. Working in the lagoons is one thing. Fishing in open water quite another. The days of iron men and wooden ships!
The Rythm of the Dhoni of Maldives

The rhythm of the dhoni is a big contributor to Maldivian music and you must get a CD to bring home. Look for the Group Zero Atoll. The dhoni is the traditional boat Maldivians use to ferry passengers or goods from island to island. The design of the dhoni is unique to Maldives.

I don't want to spoil your holiday but just watch out for your carbon footprint. This new government in Maldives continue to highlight the impact of global warming on the islands. Maldives keep losing some of the islands each year. They have set aside government revenue for land somewhere where their citizens can settle when the inevitable happens. To highlight this, the cabinet held an underwater session.
