If you are suffering from mesothilioma (also known as Mesothelioma) then you may need to learn a lot more about your condition. This site may help...
What is Malignant Mesothilioma ?
Mesothilioma is a form of cancer that can attack three areas:
1. The cell lining around the outside of lungs
2. Inside the ribs (pleura)
3. Around abdominal organs (peritoneum).
What causes Malignant Mesothilioma?
Mesothilioma is caused through exposure to asbestos fibres, where the asbestos fibres have been inhaled and brought onto the lungs.
History of Malignant Mesothilioma
Knowledge about the negative affects of asbestos emerged as early as the 1950's, however the asbestos manufacturers kept this to themselves. Early signs appeared in the 1960's and the warnings were merely swept under the carpet. The results of exposure to Mesothelioma are becoming increasingly evident across former workers, and even today people are not informed about Mesothilioma in their work place, and can be at risk of Mesothilioma.
Asbestos and Malignant Mesothilioma
Asbestos is a mineral that has been used on the manufacturing industry up until the late 1960's. It was mainly used as a fire retardent. It has been most commonly found in people who worded in ship yards and the building and construction industry.
The asbestos fibres are usually breathed in or inhaled as a result of contact with the substance. The fibres work their way down to the mesothelium which produces fluid which keeps the intestines moist. However the cells in the mesothelium eventually start to divide uncontrollably, and the cancer is born.

Asbestos is a type of naturally occurring mineral with long fibrous crystals. Asbestos was very popular among manufacturers and builders in the late 19th century for use as insulation against heat, electricity, and chemicals. It was also used for sound absorption and tensile strength.
Unfortunately when the fibers are broken they shatter along the length of the fiber creating smaller fibers with diameters less than 1/1000th the thickness of a human hair. - Pleural Mesothelioma
- Pleural mesothilioma, a cancer of the membrane surrounding the chest cavity and the lungs, is an uncommon but very serious type of cancer which is usually caused by exposure to high levels of airborne asbestos dust. Sometimes as much as 50 years will pass between the exposure and the onset of symptoms. These symptoms are not unique to pleural Mesothilioma nor are they highly unusual, so often Mesothilioma is not diagnosed until the symptoms become serious and the cancer is quite advanced.
- Peritonal Mesothilioma
- Peritoneal Mesothilioma is an extremely rare type of cancer (only 100 to 500 cases are diagnosed in the US each year) affecting the lining of the abdomen, or peritoneum which is caused by long-term exposure to asbestos. For many years, due to its cheap cost, asbestos was widely used in many industrial products, such as insulation, flooring, roofing shingles, siding, brake linings, and textiles. Like all other forms of Mesothilioma, the disease will not manifest itself for decades after exposure. Mesothilioma of the peritoneum is a very uncommon form of cancer that accounts for less than one fourth of all Mesothilioma cases.

Mesothilioma Treatment Options
There are several
Mesothilioma stages - here are possible treatments.
Treatment options for malignant mesothilioma will depend on the location of the disease, the stage, patients age and other genreal health factors. There are usually several treatment options available, inlcuding:
* Surgery
* Radiation therapy
* Chemotherapy
Doctors may prefer to combine several treatments for immediate action to help confront the cancer.
Before treatment can be done, there are several tests that may be performed:
* Chest X-rays
* CT scan
