Malmaison Hotel - Edinburgh, Scotland
The Edinburgh Malmaison is the "mother of all Mals" being the first one in the chain to be opened. It's located in the trendy, redeveloped Leith area of the city and is convenient for sightseeing, theatregoing and shopping in Edinburgh.
A Hotel With History
The stylish Malmaison building was built in 1883. It was previously a seaman's mission and, according to the Mal's own website, a house of ill repute. They have since redecorated to a very high standard and changed the bed linen of course.

Malmaison - A Boutique Hotel
Boutique Hotel: Not Cheap, But Ever So Stylish
The Malmaison hotel group launched in 1994, before the term 'boutique hotel' was in common usage. The Malmaison Edinburgh was the first in the chain and pretty much ticks all the boxes expected for boutique chic with its ultra trendy bar and brasserie restaraunt.
The hotel is in the Leith district of Edinburgh which is at the waterfront on the Firth of Forth. There are lots of shops and restaraunts within walking distance and the city centre is only a few minutes away by bus or taxi.
There are 100 rooms, each of them is very individual and stylish. All rooms have CD players, satellite TV, toiletries that you're encouraged to take home with you and well stocked minibars.
The brasserie serves French and Scottish dishes and the prices are very reasonable. You can choose from two menus - the normal menu, which is very good and a separate menu which is full of locally sourced produce. The seafood is great.
If you overindulge in either bar or brasserie you can sweat it off later, and salve your conscience somewhat, in the hotel gym.
Malmaison is pet friendly.
They accept all dogs.
An extra £10 per stay (not per night) will get your pet its own dinner bowl and basket.
Cool.

What's The Weather Like in Edinburgh Today?
- and tomorrow, and the next day?
Even if the sun is cracking the pavement, you might want to take an umbrella with you! It is pretty changeable in Edinburgh.

- Visit Edinburgh Castle
- Edinburgh castle was built around 1130, although the Castle Rock has signs of human habitation dating back to the Bronze Age.
You're going to need a full day (at least) to appreciate the history. - Visit the Royal Yacht Britannia
- Previously the Queen's private yacht, now decommissioned and docked at the Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre.
It's open to the public and you'll be treading in the footsteps of some of the world's leading statesmen and celebrtities.
After you've completed your tour you can visit the shopping centre which is right next door to get a souveneir. - Scotch Whisky Experience
- Take the Scotch Whisky tour, the whisky centre is located in the centre of the town - just down the hill from the castle. Learn a little about Scotch whisky and sample a few while you're at it.
- City Tours - With a Twist
- As you might expect from an old city steeped in history, Edinburgh is reputed to have more than its fair share of ghosts and ghouls.
You can learn a little about Edinburgh's dark history by taking a tour of the Old Town. Find out about graverobbers, witches, ghosts and a variety of ne'er-do-wells who have stalked the streets of Edinburgh for hundreds of years.
You can also see the "underground city" as featured on the Discovery Channel in both the USA and Europe. - Edinburgh Shopping - Ocean Terminal
- A cosmopolitan city like Edinburgh offers plenty of opportunities to do some serious injury to your credit card.
All major stores are represented in and around Prince's Street, in the heart of the city.
The Ocean Terminal shopping centre (mall if you prefer) is situated close to the Malmaison Hotel - about 5 minutes walk. - Dining Out in Edinburgh
- Edinburgh has some of the best restaurants you could hope to find - and plenty of them.
I will provide a list of some of my own favourites - but the above link will take you to a good general info site on eating out in Edinburgh.
A Few of My Favourite Edinburgh Restaraunts
- Daniel's Bistro
- French cuisine cooked by genuine French chefs in Edinburgh. The food is wonderful and this restaraunt is located about 10 minutes walk from the Malmaison.
- Skipper's Bistro
- This is a fantastic seafood restaraunt. Tucked out of the way round the corner in Dock Place but well worth seeking out. Again it's about 10 minutes walk from the Malmaison.
