What exactly is Malware?

A beginners guide to malware.

Malware

An Explanation

Malware is a program that is unknowingly downloaded to your computer that affects it in a negative way and changes exsisting files (slow computer, crashing computer, data theft). The most common way to get malware in my experience is downloading free screensavers. Now I can't say all the sites are malious(bad), but the bulk of them are. There are a few main file types you should be careful of, especially if you get them in an email. .EXE (program), .SCR(screensaver), .DLL(program instruction). I will get into greater detail about file types in other lenses.

There are many types of Malware which I will brief you on.

Trojan Horse
Trojan Horse is a malware that disguses itself inside what look like a safe and legitmate program. A Trojan Horse can be any type of malware, spyware, or grayware, so I consider it more of a delierey method then eveything else.

FAST FACT - Trojan Horses were oringally only programmed in Pascal. The defination has changed throught the years.

Worms
Worns are self replicating programs (they copy themselves) and use these files to infect other computers. Worms are very common.

RootKits
Root Kits are the most devious of all malware. They hide themselves from the users view by either copying vital system operations or hiding themselves within programs like explorer.exe. If you have a good Anti Virus Solution it will stop these dead in theur tracks. If you do not, and then you get infected by one, Most antivirus can not dectect them and therefore can not protect you.

I hope that gives you a basic overview of what malware is. If you'd like more information or a new more advanced lens go to a> and email me.
