Mamma Mia!

Mamma Mia started out as a song which was taken from ABBA's third album, ABBA. It was written by Benny and Bjorn of Abba along with Stig Anderson. Mamma Mia differed from othe Abba songs in that lead vocals on other songs were taken by Agnetha or Frida, but on Mamma Mia both girls shared the lead vocals.

In 1999 Mamma Mia the stage musical opened in London's West End.
Mamma Mia! featured many of ABBA's songs, and production of the stage musical spread to many other countries, with over 1500 performances on Broadway alone.

2008 saw the release of the film version of Mamma Mia! with superstars such as Meryl Streep, Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth the Movie was a certain hit, and popular with all ages.

Mamma Mia The Song

Mamma Mia was never released as a single in Abbas home country Sweden, but it was Abba's first song to make a breakthrough in Australia and really sparked off their rise in popularity there and elsewhere.
The single release of Mamma Mia initially topped the Australian charts in November 1975 and it stayed on the top spot for a total of 10 weeks! At the time, it was said that one out of every three people in Australia owned an ABBA record.
Because of the overwhelming success of Mamma Mia in Australia the single was eventually, albeit reluctantly, released in the UK and other countries. It was almost 2 months after it was released in the UK that it reached No. 1 in the charts, knocking Queens Bohemian Rhapsody off the top - Coinidently Bohemian Rhapsody also included the words Mamma Mia in the lyrics.
Mamma Mia went on to reach the No.1 spot in Ireland, Switzerland and West Germany and it also got to the top 5 in New Zealand, Norway, Belgium, Austria and South Africa.

Mamma Mia - The Song Lyrics

The words to the song Mamma Mia by Abba

ABBA
Benny Andersson
Bjorn Ulvaeus
Anni-Frid Lyngstad
Agnetha Faltskog

I've been cheated by you since I don't know when
So I made up my mind, it must come to an end
Look at me now, will I ever learn?
I don't know how but I suddenly lose control
There's a fire within my soul
Just one look and I can hear a bell ring
One more look and I forget everything, o-o-o-oh

Mamma mia, here I go again
My my, how can I resist you?
Mamma mia, does it show again?
My my, just how much I've missed you
Yes, I've been brokenhearted
Blue since the day we parted
Why, why did I ever let you go?
Mamma mia, now I really know,
My my, I could never let you go.

I've been angry and sad about the things that you do
I can't count all the times that I've told you we're through
And when you go, when you slam the door
I think you know that you won't be away too long
You know that I'm not that strong.
Just one look and I can hear a bell ring
One more look and I forget everything, o-o-o-oh

Mamma mia, here I go again
My my, how can I resist you?
Mamma mia, does it show again?
My my, just how much I've missed you
Yes, I've been brokenhearted
Blue since the day we parted
Why, why did I ever let you go?
Mamma mia, even if I say
Bye bye, leave me now or never
mamma mia, it's a game we play
Bye bye doesn't mean forever

Mamma mia, here I go again
My my, how can I resist you?
Mamma mia, does it show again?
My my, just how much I've missed you
Yes, I've been brokenhearted
Blue since the day we parted
Why, why did I ever let you go
Mamma mia, now I really know
My my, I could never let you go

Abba is arguably the greatest pure pop act of all time. They are the inspiration for countless male-female groups even to this day and their irresistibly catchy melodies, close harmonies and emotionally resonant lyrics have been imitated many times but never bettered.

Mamma Mia! The Musical

Mamma Mia! Then became a stage musical based on the songs of ABBA, composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. Although the title of the musical was taken from the Abba's 1975 hit single Mamma Mia, the plot is purely fictional, not a biographical story of the group.
Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson were involved in the development of the show from the beginning. Anni-Frid Lyngstad has been involved financially in the production, while Agnetha Fältskog has not, though she was present at the Swedish premiere and final show.

Based on the songs of ABBA the musical was an instant hit and over 30 million people have seen it since its opening in 1999. The show includes such hits as "Super Trouper", "Dancing Queen", "Knowing Me, Knowing You", "Thank You for the Music", "Money, Money, Money", "The Winner Takes It All", "Voulez Vous", "I Have a Dream" and "SOS".

In the 1970's, the Swedish musical phenomenon known as ABBA-Agnetha F?skog, Benny Andersson, Bj?Ulvaeus, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad-succeeded in reinventing the world's perception of pop. They produced hit after catchy hit, each one instantly recognizable, infectious, and irresistible. Nearly a quarter of a century later, these beloved songs gave birth to the blockbuster musical MAMMA MIA!, which became a legend in its own right. It opened in 85 cities and has since been seen by more than 20 million people throughout the world. This officially sanctioned book tells the double story of the band and the play-and it's told by those know it best: two of the group's singer/songwriters and MAMMA MIA! producer Judy Craymer. It's colorful literally and figuratively, and jam-packed with illustrations from the group's own archives. Through first-person recollections from ABBA members, intertwined with commentary from the MAMMA MIA! team, Thank You for the Music cuts through the thicket of myths and misconceptions that have grown up around ABBA to reveal what actually happened.

Mamma Mia! The Movie.

Mamma Mia! The Movie, produced by Universal Pictures in partnership with Playtone and Littlestar, is a 2008 stage-to-film adaptation of the 1999 West End musical of the same name, based on the songs of successful pop group ABBA, with additional music also composed by Benny Andersson.

Set on a colorful Greek island, the plot serves as a background for a wealth of ABBA songs. A young woman about to be married discovers that any one of three men could be her father. She invites all three to the wedding without telling her mother, Donna, who was once the lead singer of Donna and the Dynamos. In the meantime, Donna has invited her backup singers, Rosie and Tanya.

The film did fantastically well at the box office becoming the most successful Hollywood film musical of all time and the highest grossing film of all time in the United Kingdom. Like the stage musical, the film's title originates from the group's 1975 chart-topper "Mamma Mia".

Mamma Mia! became the highest-grossing film in the UK of all time.

The previous record was held by Titanic, which was released in the UK in 1998.

Amazon Spotlight

If you are one of the people who haven't seen Mamma Mia The Movie yet I can only recommend that you do so!
I know that Julie Walters is renowned for her comic roles but it was great to see the likes of Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan throwing themselves into their roles and obviously having a great time doing it. In fact all of the cast were brilliant, including the little bar tender who kind of reminded me of the guy Sanka Coffie in Cool Runnings :-)
I found the movie very amusing and so easy to watch. O.K. Pierce Brosnans singing wasn't the greatest but I think it fitted in with the humor of the movie.
Those fantastic Abba songs fitted in well with the plot and.... well it just left me feeling good, perhaps I will try the sing along version on the next viewing!

Universal Pictures Mamma Mia! The Movie (Blu-ray) The delirious sight of Meryl Streep leading a river of multigenerational women singing "Dancing Queen" is one of the high points of Mamma Mia!, the musical built around the songs of the hugely popular pop group ABBA.The plot sets in motion when Sophie (Amanda Seyfried, Mean Girls), daughter of Donna (Streep), sends a letter to three men, inviting them to her wedding--because after reading her mother's diary, she suspects that one of them is her father. When all three arrive at the Greek island where Donna runs a hotel, Donna flips out and finds that passions she thought she'd laid aside are coming back to life. But let's face it, the plot is not the point--it's a ridiculous contrivance that provides an excuse for the characters to sing the massive hits of ABBA.
