Why You Need a Man Cave

If you're a guy and you live with your girl friend, wife, significant other, etc - you need to have a man cave. A man cave is nothing more than an exclusive place to hang out in your own home, a place to do the things you like to do, but would cause problems if you did the in the "family areas" of your house. It could be a home theater to watch games with your friends, a workshop where you can get as greasy as you want, or even a quiet room where you can read a book in quiet privacy. Whatever your interests are, you need your own space to enjoy it without interruptions from other family members and without interrupting them. In short, you need a man cave.

The Entertainment Room

Lots of guys like to watch sports on TV - football, hockey, NASCAR racing, etc. If this is you, then an Entertainment Room might be the best type of man cave for you. The main feature of this type of man cave would be a large flat screen TV, hopefully connected to a good home theater system. Other features you might consider for an Entertainment Room would be a dart board or pool table. Depending on your tastes, a sturdy table for playing cards, quarters, etc would also be useful.
Since this room will most likely be located inside your house, it would be best to have easy access to the kitchen without having to walk through the rest of the house and disturbing other family members. If such access isn't possible, you may want to consider putting a second fridge in the man cave, or possibly a kegerator. If your friends are slobs, you also might consider vinyl flooring instead of carpet.
It's location and large percentage of living space consumed make the Entertainment Room the most difficult type of man cave to acquire. Other family members may feel they should be able to use the space when it's not being used for man cave purposes. Such dual use kind of violates the purpose of "exclusive use" though. I mean, what's the point of having a man cave if you have to schedule its use or (gasp!!!) ask permission to use it? You should only consider the "dual use" policy if it's the absolute only way you'll be able to have a man cave. Also realize that implementing such a policy will require some finesse, family diplomacy, and patience.

The Workshop

If your interests lie more along the lines of building race cars or woodworking, then a Workshop is definitely the type of man cave you should consider. Transmission fluid on the floor, balsa dust on the furniture, and stinking up the air with soldering flux fumes are all things that may be frowned on in your home - I know they are in mine. Fortunately, I have a garage that I've taken over as my man cave. I can get as greasy as I want, and as long as I don't track it into the house my wife doesn't complain. She did insist that I reserve one corner of the garage for her to store her gardening tools, though. So far it hasn't caused any problems.
Since this room isn't part of the main house, you'll need to buy some things. You'll need some bar stools for your friends to sit on. A small refrigerator and microwave would be nice so you can grab a snack without having to go into the house. If you don't have a fridge, an ice chest or kegerator will be essential. Other useful or fun additions would be a computer, dart board, and a killer stereo system.

The Study

Maybe you're not a sports fan and you're not into hobbies that involve getting greasy. Maybe you just want a quiet place to play chess, do some fly tying, or read. If this is the case, the the type of man cave for you would be the Study. This is the easiest man cave to set up, because you don't need more than a quiet room. In fact with a good set of room dividers you don't even need a separate room (unless you have children you want to keep out). You probably won't need refrigerator or elaborate entertainment system, but a good laptop computer would be nice. Furniture for this type of man cave would be a small desk, bookshelf, and a few comfortable chairs.

My husband has a few man caves dotted around our small piece of paradise, and I wouldn't want it any other way

My husband has a room for himself. As far as I know, he's never called it a Man Cave, but I guess that's what it is! He has his TV, model railroading board, his recliner, his work table, all his stuff. I respect his privacy so if his door is closed I don't take it personally. And I knock before entering!

The Study is definitely my man cave. Could be a little bigger though! How about adding a poll on what your favorite man cave is?
