Leadership and Management - Goal Focus

Ranked #9,118 in Business & Work, #235,207 overall

Goal focus" is the number one leadership-management skill.

There is one attribute that you must develop if your aim is to lead others towards success.
That is:

Goal focus

All leaders, no matter how they differ in other respects, function AS leaders because they have a clear goal focus.

So, remember this phrase:

Clarity is power!

The search for the key to better leadership

In the last one hundred years.....

....Psychologists have tried to correlate "leadership success" with various indicators.

They wanted to discover why some people are more successful as leaders, than others,

They tried to link success with SOCIAL CLASS............and failed.
They tried to link success with RACE.......................and failed.
They tried to link success with GENDER....................and failed.
They tried to link success with HIGHER EDUCATION......and failed.

The most powerful indicator of success as a leader is
The degree to which the person can create and sustain a "goal focus".

Those people who know exactly what it is that they what to achieve, are at a distinct advantage .

Note: "Success" is defined as: "the achievement of your goal, or its equivalent, without violating the rights of others".

If "success" means "the achievement of your goal" then success without goals is a meaningless term.

So, in order to be successful
Develop a clear goal and communicate it to your team.

Clarity is power

If there is a lack of "goal focus" and direction

What are the consequences for an individual or team if it lacks
"Clarity of purpose"?
What happens to the decision-making process?
  1. There can be no accurate decisions without clear goals.
  2. There would be nothing to make decisions about.

What is the quality of strategic planning?

  1. Again, there can be no strategic planning without clear goals.

  2. What would there be to plan for?

Without a clear goal, what is the level of motivation?
There can only be true motivation in the presence of

  1. A clear goal

  2. A good plan.

By contrast

What are the benefits of having a clear goal, reduced to writing and placed where it can be seen by everyone, every day?

  1. The development of a more focused mind.

  2. A higher degree of team motivation.

  3. The stimulation of applied planning.

  4. The stimulation of creative imagination.

  5. An improved team spirit.

So take the following steps now:

Take a moment to answer the following questions in a much detail as possible.

The BIG PICTURE

What is your goal-list for the next 1 - 3 years?

  • In terms of the development of your team?

  • In terms of the development of your product and service?

  • In terms of your career?

  • In terms of your education?

"The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision".
Helen Keller

Develop your goal by using S.M.A.R.T. Targets

SMART Targets are a method of taking goals and making them specific and clear:

S. M. A. R. T. means
Please make sure that your goal is written so that it is:
Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Realistic
Time limited.
Specific - Reduce the goal down to numerical values if possible. I.e.: describe your goals with numbers.

Measured - Decide exactly which particular set of numbers you are going to track as a means of judging if you are making progress or not.

Achievable - Ensure that your gaol is achievable by making reference to the person's skills and knowledge.

Realistic - Ensure that your goal is realistic by making reference to current constraints and limitations that you are working within.

Time Limited - Put a deadline on it. If you do not, people will procrastinate.

"If you want to live a happy productive life, tie it to a goal, not to people or things".
Albert Einstein

What is your goal?

Smart Target

Special Theory of Positivity

SPECIFIC (Numerical values?)

MEASURED (By what measure?)

ACHIEVABLE (What skills?)

REALISTIC (Does context allow?)

TIME DEADLINE (By when?)

The act of defining your goal is the first step to achieving it.

Three occasions to use SMART Targets

Use this formula in three ways:

  1. As a goal setting formula.

  2. As a method of delegating tasks to others.

  3. As a series of questions you ask your boss (or customer) to avoid confusion.

Important!

So, to be a better leader:

  1. Don't wish for things to happen, decide to make them happen!

  2. Set your goals.
