This lens is based on a very simple premise....that Management does indeed matter, each of its modules looks at a different aspect of management that inturn matters to the overall practice of effective management.
While the aim of this lens is not to provide a TOE of Management (thats theory of everything!) a collection of these kinds of thought is going to have to be taken into anything that does profess to be such a creation.... but nothing, as yet, has come anywhere close to matching the body of works laid down by Stafford Beer in this managerial cybernetics, vsm, and team syntegrity models (which of course can be traced through this lens). In the meantime this lens can serve as a Macroscope aimed at the infinitely complex field of Management.

The how , why and whereof this Lens
Each of the content modules in this lens covers an area of management expertise or points to other Squidoo Lenses that covers the area more effectively than could a single module here.In addition to the content modules, there are two types of connective linkages; The first of these is to be found in the Connective Web which gives an overview of the major subdivisions of this lens while giving a brief summary of the information to be found in the subdivsions. It is a guide to which "eye-piece" to put on the "lens" to focus this macroscope on the target of interest.
The second type of connective linkage is found in the Connective Threads example here)which give a more detailed view of the specific modules to be found in each of the subdivisions.
The taxonomy used here to partition the subject matter is roughly based on the principles of the Viable Systems Model as described in the Cybernetics module. The VSM is the most mature organizational theory: it specifies the necessary and sufficient structural preconditions for the viability of any organization. Furthermore this model has not be refuted so far.

The primary modules, that is those that contain detailed information, are primarily containers of links to web resources on each topic and sub-topic. In addition, however, most of the major topic modules are followed by a "library module" that contains a selection of the best books from my own bookshelf that can be ordered on-line...I've included the overall ranking from Amazon.com... although most are similar to the rankings I would give myself).

The Management Matters Macrosope: a brief guide to the infinitely complex
System 1: Operations is the viable system -- it is what the organization does -- its purpose for being.The function of System 2: Regulators is anti-oscilliatory. It is the norm in any large system that every element is continously adjusting to other elements or to changes in the environment. Left alone however, nothing might ever settle down - or even worse increase overtime, until the system tears it self apart by thrashing.
System 3 is responsible for all the internal and immediate of the enterprise -- the day-to-day mananagement.The System 3: The Inside and Now module contains description of various tools, techniques, technologies and processes necessary to manage the operations of a dynamic system.
System 3*: Sporadic Audit is more than just accounting. System Three management, which as previously described is responsible for the day-to-day management of the organization, must have a means of sporadically (not as a perpetual routine) looking straight into the operations themselves. Work studies, surveys, management succession audits are all examples of the techniques required in large scale organizations.
No viable system, least of all an enterprise in a changing environment,can remain viable if it only looks inward. In order to adapt it must contain a device responsible looking in a fundamentally different way at its environment. In this lens tools and techniques for this are gathered in the System 4: Outside and When module.
System 5: Policy thinks about what the firm does. It also monitors the balance between "here and now" and "outside and when."
In order for the firm to function, it must have many different communication components. These of course include the communication channels themselves but also a variety of technologies required to make the communications usable by the targets. These technologies, including amplification, attenuation, and translation processes are discussed in the Viable System Components
