Stress

Stress.

Everyone talks about it.

Stress is a mental, emotional and physiological reaction to a situation

Stress can be harmful.

And then it is called DIS stress

But how exactly what is stress and how can we deal with it?

Harmful Stress

Stress can be harmful in the sense that it:

1. Fuels emotional breakdown

2. Initiates the bodies fight or flight hormones

3. Interferes with the proper digestion

4. Interferes with rational thought and action

Good Stress

Stress can be good, in the sense that it:

1. Fuels emotional enthusiasm and energy

2. Stimulates the body into constructive action

3. Stimulates creative thought

4. Causes the person to feel more vibrant and alive!

Then it is called Eustress

How can we make stress good, not bad?

How can you make stress EUSTRESS not DIS-STRESS?
How can you make stress work for you, not against you?

Let us break stress reactions into two categories:

1. Stress of the MIND

2. Stress of the BODY

I want to cover two points regarding the mental/emotional aspects of stress

I want to cover three points regarding the physical aspects of stress

Let's look at the mental/emotional aspects of stress

There are two kinds of Stress of the MIND

1. "Self talk"
2. "Pictures in the mind"

Self talk

Self talk is "that continuous internal chatter of thoughts that go on inside your head.
It gives a running commentary on the day's events, and suggests what reactions are right".

Harmful Self talk

Harmful self talk is "that continuous internal chatter of thoughts that go on inside your head. It gives a running commentary on how the day's events are running against you and are:
  • Unfair
  • Bad
  • Nor what you wanted
  • And that you have the right to feel bad

Supportive Self talk

Supporting self talk is "that continuous internal chatter of thoughts that go on inside your head. It gives a running commentary on how the day's events are running for and against you and are
  • Interesting
  • A challenge
  • Can be converted into what you want
  • And that you have the right to feel good

Pictures in the mind

"Picture in the mind" is "that continuous internal imagery of thoughts that go on inside your head.
They give a running movie on the meaning of the day's events, and suggests what reactions are right".

Fearful Pictures in the mind

Fearful pictures in the mind is "that continuous internal visual imagery of thoughts that go on inside your head.
They give a running movie on the meaning of the day's events: how the day's events are running against you and are:

  • Going to mean disaster
  • Going to mean pain
  • Going to mean trouble

Supportive Pictures in the mind

Supportive pictures in the mind is "that continuous internal imagery of thoughts that go on inside your head.
They give a running movie on the meaning of the day's events, how the day's events are running FOR and against you and are:

  • Going to mean challenge
  • Going to need ingenuity
  • Going to need your skill
  • Going to be fun
Important!

NOTE the following well:

You can control your mental chatter to make your mind support you.
Don't let your mind work against you.
You MUST, from now on, control your mental chatter to make your mind work for you.

Stress of the Physical body

Your life is a continuous chemical reaction involving

  • Carbon

  • Hydrogen

  • Oxygen

  • Phosphorous

  • Nitrogen

  • Magnesium

  • Sodium

  • Copper

  • Iron
And a few other elements

If you add arsenic into your system, your life stops!

Your life is "chemistry in action".
And you are free to "Change your chemistry"

So, one way to change how you feel is to: Change and tamper with your physical chemistry.

People do this all the time in order to change how they feel

Tampering with your chemistry can be done in two ways:

1. The good way

2. The bad way

The bad way

There are three ways to go wrong:

1 Drink booze

When in stress and you want to feel better: drink alcohol.

This will interfere with the functioning of your brain and you will not feel the unpleasant sensations any more (until the morning)

2 Eat more food

When in stress and you want to feel better: Eat copious quantities of food

This will load the brain and guts with nutrients (more than the body can use) and you will feel the pleasant sensations of being well (over) fed.

3 Take drugs

When in stress and you want to feel better: take drugs

This will interfere with the functioning of your nervous system and you will not feel the unpleasant sensations any more. You will feel better for a while.

The Good Way

Three good ways to change your chemistry

1. Eat more nutrition

I make the distinction between "food" and "nutrition".

When in stress and you want to feel better: eat small amounts of nutritious food

This will support the functioning of your brain and you will feel the pleasant sensations of energy and vibrant health

2. Sleep

When in stress and you want to feel better: break off and rest or even take a POWER NAP!

This will support the functioning of your brain and you will feel the pleasant sensations of energy and vibrant health

3. Exercise

When in stress and you want to feel better: break off and exercise during lunch break!

This will support the functioning of your body and you will feel the pleasant sensations of energy and vibrant health

Summary

Stress is a mental, emotional and physiological reaction to a situation
