Managing Dust Mite Allergies

Managing dust mite allergies is not always as easy as one would think one of the first things I noticed when I brought my first born home was a rash that developed when she was about three days old. We had come home from the hospital and while changing her I noticed that her little body had started to develop a reddish, raised rash.

The nature of the rash was unknown at the time the best I could do was try to guess it's cause, and remove it from her surroundings to see if it would clear.

The pediatrician advised me to re wash all of her clothes with a mild Ivory soap but little did I know at the time that my daughter was highly sensitive to allergens and that the rash was only the beginning of a long road ahead.managing dust mite allergies.

Allergens are considered to be any substance that can trigger an inappropriate immune response, or allergy, in susceptible people. Common allergens include animal fur, dust, pollen and certain foods or medications.
An Allergic reaction
is a response, such as a rash, hives, itching, asthma, hay fever, etc., to an allergen. Airborne particles, such as dust mites, mold, cockroaches, pet dander, and secondhand smoke, can trigger allergic reactions the house dust mite, its feces and chitin are common allergens around the home and airborne particles, such as dust mites, mold, cockroaches, pet dander, and secondhand smoke, that can trigger allergies

Common Types Of Allergies

Some of the more common types of allergies are:

Dust mite

Pollen

Pet dander

Chlorine

Perfume

Food allergies are not as common as food sensitivity, but some foods such as

Peanuts

Nuts

Seafood

Shellfish

can be the cause of serious allergic reactions in many people.

The First Few Years

As the years went by there were many instances of severe allergic reactions an allergic reaction is usually caused by any form of direct contact with the allergen-consuming food or drink, breathing in pollen, perfume or pet dander, or brushing a body part against an allergy-causing plant.
I became vigilant of what she was able to consume, or touch or even play with.

Right around the time she was 4 years old I distinctly recall a particular day when she wanted to take a bubble bath and one of the favorite things for kids at that time were soap markers that resemble Crayola Crayons in their shapes, and colors but were made from soap.
The Idea was that as the child bathed they could play with this washable marker in the bathtub. Well, needless to say that seemingly harmless event turned into a nightmare within a few minutes of being in the water I notice these huge hives starting to cover her body I was horrified!

Dust Mites, The Real Culprit

I was so grateful that her hives responded to oral medication but as the years progressed and she underwent treatment with an allergist, he recommended carrying an epic pen.

One of the most serious forms of an allergic reaction is called anaphylaxis. And one treatment used is the administration of sterile epinephrine to the person experiencing anaphylaxis, which suppresses the body's overreaction to the allergen.

For her, dust seems to be one of the things that trigger onsets of allergic reactions the most. The dust mite allergen is their tiny feces and body fragments which are components of dust. These particles are so small they can become airborne and inhaled when dust is disturbed.
The concern about dust mites is people are allergic to them.

Symptoms associated with dust mite allergies include sneezing, itchy, watery eyes, nasal stuffiness, runny nose, stuffy ears, respiratory problems, eczema and (in severe cases) asthma. Many people notice these symptoms when they stir dust during cleaning activities. But, dust also contains other allergens, including cat and dog dander, cigarette ash, cockroach droppings, mold spores and pollen.

Take Action!

To eliminate dust mite allergens, I first took actions to reduce dust mite populations and second, reduce exposure to dust. No one method has been found for reducing mites and relieving allergy suffering but by reducing the contact with dust she seemed more comfortable in her environment.

I took steps such as

Lowering Humidity

Avoiding Furry or Feathered pets

Cleaning/heat treatments

Vacuuming

Dusting

Air Purifiers

First Things First

What I did first was to start in the bedroom. Most of the dust mites in your house live in your mattress. I Put a tightly woven, dust-proof cover over her mattress. Washed her sheets and blankets in very hot water every week. put a dust-proof cover on pillows (The pillowcase goes over the cover.)
Vacuuming your carpets and upholstery every week can help. Vacuums with high-efficiency filters pick up more dust mites, but even standard vacuums will help. Plastic or wood furniture that doesn't have much padding can also help keep down the number of dust mites in your home. Because dust mites love warm, humid places, keep the humidity in your home low by using a dehumidifier and running your air conditioner. Special air filters can also help reduce dust mites in the air.

Use a damp cloth or rag weekly to wipe surfaces where dust can collect. This includes counter tops, shelves and windowsills. If your children have allergies, make sure to buy them stuffed animals that you can put in the washing machine.

Allergies, It's Not Just For Kids

My daughter is now 26 and thanks to treatments and a few precautions she is managing her allergic reactions more effectively, they are less frequent, and less severe these days but anyone who has suffered with allergies knows how miserable one can feel. Why not do little things that can make your life better!
